Comments Thread For: Pacquiao-CBS/Showtime: It's Good For Boxing, Says Koncz

Michael Koncz, the adviser to WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, believes their decision to take the May 7 pay-per-view fight with Shane Mosley to HBO's network rival, Showtime/CBS, will be good for the sport of boxing. Koncz acknowledged a big advantage presented by Showtime's ability to televise a multi-part series that is equivalent to HBO's 24/7 -- on CBS primetime. There is also CBS's ability to reach 115 million homes compared to HBO's 28 million homes. All of Pacquiao's major pay-per-view fights have been carried by HBO.

There is really no downside, at worst the fight does meh which was always a possibility anyways.

They had issues with the way HBO helped them, if they feel that way they should go across the street especially if they feel the offer is more sound, because even if Showtime/CBS do not meet their expectation they can get more out of HBO if they want to go back.

It can be good for boxing because increased competition almost never hurts long term, but really Top Rank and Manny aren't boxing (as a whole) those are the current beneficiaries and their reasoning was not for the good of the sport.

Manny is a great champ but we all know what this is about. Its not a secret that most fans and boxing writers think Manny vs. Molsey is crap. I mean, if HBO was so great then why move to Showtime? I will say that its nice to see that boxing will get national exposure and maybe that will help boxing out but this is all about exposing the Manny vs. Mosley fight to casual fans that know nothing about boxing. Arum, Manny and company are hoping that exposing this horrible fight will get the ticket sales up because real boxing fans know this damn fight is bull. At the end of the day, Manny is full of it just like Mayweather. They don't want to give the fans real fight and its all about the money now.

Con'cz is pretending to be an expert in network business... He is just parroting arum's views about the shift to showtime. He ain't got any intelligent views of his own.

Can it be good for boxing? Yes and no. It might give boxing more exposure nationally, which is good, but all this will really do is advertise a crappy fight.

Correct Showtime /CBS is good for boxing but Pac vs Mosley is not. I just hope Shane doesn't performs like he did against Mayweather & Mora which is very likely to happen...

If everyone involved plays their cards right, this could be the beginning of a renaissance in Boxing, but something tells me someone will figure out a way to screw it up as usual.

People mention CBS because CBS is involved and Koncz said they could air a 24/7 on CBS primetime. This is just a phony reason to reach casual fans that don't know this fight is phony.
