This thread has been made before. And it always turns out the same.
The Calzaghe fans that have watched him fight bum after bum in the UK remember his power and boxing skill against those bums and pick Calzaghe using the (u guys don't know the real Calzaghe excuse over and over). But its true, Calzaghe was a fast handed swarmer, with great athletic ability, and in his prime, he did have power.
And the people that remember what a beast both boxing-wise and fighting-wise will say Hagler becuz they know Calzaghe as the slapper he was when he ended his career. Calzaghe fans will bring up how Leonard outboxed him, but that was barely (some would argue it happened at all), and that wasn't prime Hagler.
I say Hagler by KO in a decent fight.Last edited by JDezi4; 01-25-2011, 05:50 PM.Comment

Calzaghe take a UD.
Joe has the better hanspeed. stamina and has a reach and height advantage.
Both southpaw, so that could prove a problem for both, getting tagged a lot more.
Calzaghe may have been put down a few times, but he has a rock chin and amazing powers of recovery and his head clears very quick.
Calzaghe will fight in flurries like SRL winning the rounds but will not run as much as SRL.
Calzaghe has power too and can hurt Hagler but can't see Joe stopping him Hagler was tough as nails.
Hagler will have success but not enough and Joe's chin will hold up and even if he were to be put down he would recover.
Calzaghe by about 4 rounds.Comment

As long as Hagler handles the jump in weight alright, he should win.
Although Calzaghe is taller, Hagler actually has the reach advantage. He had very long arms. Hagler had a better jab, better defense with his parrying & head movement, more refined technical skills, and is one of the most versatile/complete fighters to lace them up. He could box, brawl, fight lefty, fight orthodox, be effective at long range, mid-range, and up close.
Calzaghe's advantages are that he is naturally bigger (he had trouble making 168 in the era of day before weigh-ins) and quicker. His best chance is to use flurries and in and out movement. Outhustle Hagler up close with fast flurries and then get out. If he tries to swarm Hagler and pressure him, he's going to run into those short crisp shots or eat a lot of right jabs.
Calzaghe takes a good shot and had excellent conditioning. I think he'd steal a few rounds using the above style I mentioned, but ultimately, Hagler prevails by decision.Last edited by Thread Stealer; 01-25-2011, 08:59 PM.Comment

Halger. Not a knock on Calzaghe either, but Leonard is the only man to even make it look possible to beat him in his prime. And he waited until he was older and by stealing rounds. Says a lot about the fighter.
Still, Calzaghe would probably survive the fight, but would lose a big majority of the rounds. Around 9 or 10.Comment
