Arum's Move to Showtime: Destroying the Myths

    1) No. You do not need to subscribe to SHO to get a SHO PPV. It will be widely available.

    2) No. Cable networks do not "buy" PPV fights. They may offer a nice promotional/marketing deal (24/7, face-off, commercials, online marketing, etc) but they don't pay a license fee the way that they pay for non-PPV fights.

    3) No. The network doesn't make a huge amount of money on a PPV fight. The bulk of the money goes to the regional affiliates who carry the fight. The network may get 7-10% of revenues but deal structures vary.

    4) No. Arum isn't crazy. Arum did the right thing, as long as he doesn't alienate HBO. Bob has carried his own PPV's previously (for example, when HBO chose Hopkins/Tarver over Cotto/Malignaggi).

    5) Help me here. ... what other misconceptions need to be debunked?

You don’t need to be an HBO subscriber to get an HBO PPV either.

I worked for a consulting firm that happened to have TWC as a client. And then went to work for a CPG company that sponsors stadiums and events.

          So I'm using personal experience.

I think you pretty much got it. I think the general conception of why fights are on PPV when fans determine them as non-PPV worthy should be explained too. That one is always misunderstood.

Here's an example: Judah-Mabuza is a PPV. Why is this a PPV? HBO and Showtime were not interested in purchasing this to air on their networks. ESPN was interested in airing it but could not come to an agreement with Main Events. If the 3 boxing networks are not interested and/or can't meet your price/contract what is the other option? PPV.

The idea that HBO turned down Pacquiao-Mosley because they wanted a more competitive fight or one that the 'fans' wanted, when they just made a a$$load of $ from the unpopular, 'boycotted' Pacquiao-Margarito.

Yup. HBO wanted this PPV according to numerous people in the know.

Who gives an F, i am subscribing to Showtime for 1 reason and 1 reason only, to second rated boxing shows, but I am buying the PPV not because SHOWTIME is marketing it on their networks, because its going to be a fantastic fight.

I can give 2 F's who pockets my money, all I care about is a good fight night.
