Sergio Martinez, while a fantastic fighter, can't draw flies anywhere on God's Green Earth. The money generated in a potential Martinez-Cotto fight would be on the strength of Cotto, an attraction created by Top Rank.
How does DiBella lose millions in this instance? He doesn't...he makes more money off of a Sergio Martinez fight than he has ever before. You wanna talk about losing millions? Well, Top Rank spent millions of dollars building Cotto up and making him into an attraction, and in recent years have reaped the benefits of the money and time they invested. Maybe if DiBella had been willing to do the same time for his fighters, he wouldn't have to rely on piggy backing on an attraction created by another promoter.Comment

If DiBella considers Top Rank offering Sergio Martinez more money than he's ever made in a 10+ year career being "pushed around" and "bull****," then Top Rank had good sense to tell them to go **** themselves.

When someone wants to buy you out for 2.5M when they know you have the potential of making millions. Nobody in their right mind would accept 2.5M when they know they can make millions more with PPV sales, live gate, site fee, sponsors, etc.Comment

Timer Warner also has billions.
The difference is HBO actually has a big budget and Showtime's budget will remain the same. It doesn't matter if CBS has more money because they're not spending it on boxing fights. They can have all the money in the world, but they're not going to spend it on boxing.
If Showtime really wanted to be a player in the boxing business... they could've done that a while ago.
It's the CEO and President of CBS that made an effort with Bob Arum. Not showtime but the President of CBS himself.
The idea was revisited in December 2009, when Arum, Les Moonves (CEO and president of CBS Corporation), and attorney Allen Grubman were vacationing with their wives in Mexico. It percolated while Pacquiao fought Joshua Clottey (March 13th) and Antonio Margarito (November 13th) on HBO-PPV. Then Moonves made an oral presentation to Arum outlining what CBS and Showtime were prepared to offer.Comment

The reason DiBella wanted Martinez to fight Cotto is not because it's such a great match-up. It's because he knows outside of Pacquiao and Floyd (two fighters Martinez has virtually no chance of fighting) Cotto is the biggest draw in Martinez's weight range. I say DiBella is looking to piggy back on another attraction because of his proposal to buy Arum out of the fight, when it's Arum fighter who's the attraction, knowing Sergio isn't capable of generating millions on his own. The fact that Martinez was even willing to come down to a catch-weight of 155 pounds for the fight, shows you who needed who.
Without a strong A-side, there are no PPV sales for Sergio Martinez, meager numbers at the gate, smaller site fees, and few sponsors. When someone offers you the biggest payday of your career and you bring little (if any) to the table financially, you should accept it and not be concerned about what the other side stands to gain. As I stated in my previous post, the money generated in a potential Martinez-Cotto fight would be on the strength of Cotto, an attraction created by Top Rank.Comment

HBO will be JUST FINE! Actually this will allow HBO to push younger guys like the guys in that 140 division, Short Term...Showtime will probably win but LONG TERM, HBO still have the advantage with the TOP YOUNG FIGHTERS
now this gives them a chance to build up more young fighters like the guys in that 140 division and they still have Sergio Martinez who has the most momentum in boxing right nowComment
