if boxing wouldnt have made it into their lives without manny pacquiao then yes
they arent boxing fans. they are manny fans / fans of themselves as Phillipinos or whatnot.

those who would be fans of the sport without manny are fans of boxing

as a general rule i'd say that most of manny's fans (or at least the loud ones) weren't boxing fans before he came into the spotlight (after de la hoya)

and i'm still up in the air as to whether or not they will stop following the sport once pacquiao loses or retires.

a fan of the sport of boxing dedicates huge portions of his time and money to the sport
he supports his favorite fighters and local and ethnic ties, but they dont blind him
he appreciates the sport and will not take it for granted

he feels for fighters when they win
he feels it when they lose

he understands the implications of the behavior of the powerful people who control the sport
he's a savvy researcher and probably a beast on the computer

he doesnt have to buy every ppv, but he's got to support his favorite fighters in their big meaninful fights and will go out of his way to work it into the budget if the need pops up (of course if you cant afford it you cannot afford it. if you buy a 60 dollar ppv and go hungry you gotta re-evaluate things)

some of the boxing fan's most valuable posessions are his memories of the sport
he recognizes the mortality of a fighter and his career, and will never take a fighters prime or greatness for granted

    and finally
he loves his sport more than most people love thiers
and is visciously proud of being a fan

news flash, a "true boxing fan" is anyone who enjoy boxing.

whether you cheer for one fighter, or really try to follow every fighter even at the prospect level, you are a boxing fan.

whether you like defensive, technical fights or enjoy brutal, blood filled knockouts and ass whoppings, you are a boxing fan.

whether you enjoy talking about the sport in a business sense or like to discuss about boxer's strategy, you are a fan.

whether you have been watching boxing for 35 years or just started following it a week ago, then you are a fan.

even that creepy dominican pretending to be a gay pinoy is a boxing fan.

i don't know why you guys like to look down on everybody and think so highly of yourselves. you label yourself as real boxing fans and everybody else as being something less.

we all enjoy the sport, and as far as i am concerned here, we're all true boxing fans here
You are correct in saying the definition is not clear to you.

existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, about the act, technique, or profession of fighting with the fists, with or without boxing gloves motivated or characterized by an extreme, uncritical enthusiasm.

                  This thread is lame.

We know which posters only follow the "popular" boxers and which posters genuinely would love the sport if all those fighters retired.

I have hbo & showtime, just for the fights. If there weren't any fights on there,I'd have basic cable & netflix alone.Come every weekend,I scroll through the channels, trying to get my fix,i love boxing, strictly for the fights,I have no interest in the business aspect, just the science,in all of it's different forms!!
                    Thank you for the compliment.
As for the bolded..."Basically cheaters,Ped users, cherry picking, etc.", I didnt really mean it to apply to an individual boxer but to the boxers they apply to.
In other words "if the shoe fits"....I dont care if its my favorite fighter or least favorite its a disgrace.
Im not obsessed so I cant prove or have defense for any fighter. Because honestly I dont know.

If you don't like Mayweather you are not a real boxng fan, or at least that's what mayweather fans always say . If you follow boxing then you are a real boxing fan its as simple as that.
