they arent boxing fans. they are manny fans / fans of themselves as Phillipinos or whatnot.
those who would be fans of the sport without manny are fans of boxing
as a general rule i'd say that most of manny's fans (or at least the loud ones) weren't boxing fans before he came into the spotlight (after de la hoya)
and i'm still up in the air as to whether or not they will stop following the sport once pacquiao loses or retires.
a fan of the sport of boxing dedicates huge portions of his time and money to the sport
he supports his favorite fighters and local and ethnic ties, but they dont blind him
he appreciates the sport and will not take it for granted
he feels for fighters when they win
he feels it when they lose
he understands the implications of the behavior of the powerful people who control the sport
he's a savvy researcher and probably a beast on the computer
he doesnt have to buy every ppv, but he's got to support his favorite fighters in their big meaninful fights and will go out of his way to work it into the budget if the need pops up (of course if you cant afford it you cannot afford it. if you buy a 60 dollar ppv and go hungry you gotta re-evaluate things)
some of the boxing fan's most valuable posessions are his memories of the sport
he recognizes the mortality of a fighter and his career, and will never take a fighters prime or greatness for granted
and finally
he loves his sport more than most people love thiers
and is visciously proud of being a fan
