i think holmes had somewhat of a case saying people just didn't want to see him beat rocky marciano's mark.

cooney wasn't that bad imo. not great but not as bad as people make him out to be.

but that said holmes deserves a lot more credit for beating cooney than spinks did.

i'm not talking that lame "leftover" talk either that morons on this site like to talk about.

cooney was coming off big name wins before fighting holmes.

spinks fought cooney years later when cooney had only 1 fight in the past 2 1/2 years.

He wasnt at his best at Heavyweight but he still beat one of the greats. Most people think they are 1-1. Cooney was an excellant fighter, he holds wins over Jimmy Young, Ken Norton and Ron Lyle and beat them in consecutive fights. He gave a prime Larry Holmes hell aswell. One of the most underrated heavyweights ever.

Michael Spinks is unquestionably an all-time great.

no offense, but how is this a question?

Hes one of the best LHWs of all time who went up and won the HW title over a top 5 ATG Heavyweight.

even without him going to Heavyweight I would consider him an ATG

I'm only fond of Spinks big wins so I can't speak on his ATG status...

But some on here (at times) act like Spinks was only a decent name in order to discredit Iron Mike's place in history......I'm just saying...

being an ATG and being a 'huge win' are entirely different things. McCallum is an obvious ATG, but I certainly dont consider Roy Jones' win over him to be amazing.

Spinks wasnt the best Heavyweight, nor was he prime when he fought Tyson. Im not full of the entire story, but I think Spinks wasnt training as much due to his sister dying or something.

regardless, Tyson taking out Spinks in one round is a very impressive showing, which is why its still widely received as his best performance.
Its not like Tyson's career is based solely around the Spinks win anyway. he actually beat a lot of top ten opponents in his short period as champion.

                  Rossclat lol

I like how you did Spinks->Tyson with this thread. The title of the thread didn't even give it away. Good job

Young, Norton and Lyle were spent shells of what they use to be.I've always liked Cooney, but these are not great wins.

ANY light heavyweight version of Hopkins gets taken apart by Spinks. And if Tarver and Johnson could put Roy to sleep there should be little doubt Spinks could to.
