Wilfred Benitez was the easiest champion of the division? Ayub Kalule was the easiest champion of his division? Marvin Hagler was the easiest champion of his division?

    Settle the f^ck down,lad.
Leonard wanted nothing to do with Pipino Cuavas so he chose Bentiez who had far less power, Kaule wasn't that good, Hagler was on a down slide at that time plus he lost that fight to Hagler, So don't come on quoting me like your some boxing genious cause I watch boxing back in those days you ******

Hate is a strong word but Oscar lost alot of respect when he beat their hero and icon Julio Chavez.
Also the rich pretty boy image contrasts the tough warrior image that many associate alot of the great Mexican fighters of the past.

It's not that difficult to figure out:

DLH was born in the US, represented the US as an amateur, and fought all his pro fights in the US = American. Even his autobiography which he wrote after retirement is titled "American son".

A fighter that represents a foreign nation is never going to be fully embraced like one of their own. Even a Cuban fighters like Napoles was embraced by the Mexican public because they actually fought there.

this is true, it had nothing to do with the "pretty boy" image, mexicans are huge nationalist, you either represent mexico fully or don't represent them at all with the whole "mexican american" thing. Not only that but many mexicans felt disrespected after the 2nd fight with chavez when he did his body gestures to the whole crowd.
