The new owners of the Silverdome are complete morons. They paid a $500k site fee for this fight and there is no chance they come close to breaking even. The new owners also want to bring an MLS team there. Idiots.

If you buy a huge arena for 400 grand what do you do with it, if you don't already own a pro sports team.Comment

I actually thought they did a fine job promoting the fight. When tickets went on pre sale they ran an ad for it on 1270 sports talk radio almost every commercial. Since then they still are running an ad like every other commercial break on 1130 sports talk and I hear it often on WJLB and some other rap station here. I seen a commercial on tv for the fight and I believe both news papers have had an ad about it(free press and detroit news). What more can they honestly do? The advertising for this fight has been leaps and bounds above what Dirrell/Abraham had and that had about 5,000 people in attendance.I will just point this out to people talking about a bad economy.
People in a bad economy will pay for entertainment because they want an escape (tickets are not outrageously priced either), if you want to say they are doing a poor job promoting fair play but I have seen and heard several ads in the area although if they aren't convincing the public then yea that is coming up short.Comment

I told you so.
Putting it Michigan was a huge mistake too, everyone there is poor and can barely afford food much less fight tickets.
This is a boxing after dark fight and the public is treating it like one.

I wouldn't have bought it. Stadiums go obsolete for a reason. Bad investment to begin with, it's not in the best suburb of Detroit, and the facility was not set up for boxing or soccer. It's a football stadium that can also host large events like concerts, conferences, monster truck shows, and things like that.
I've been there probably 3 or 4 times in my life when I lived up in the mitten (all times were when the Silverdome was towards the end of it's life) and it was junk then.Comment

And yea it is way better promoted than Dirrell-Abraham which only had a couple weeks as opposed to a couple months.Comment

I had no issue with the Silverdome and it was not really obsolete it was just to big for the Lions they could not sell out 85k even when they were good, they built Ford Field to get in line with demand and so they could be on local TV at least sometimes.I wouldn't have bought it. Just do the cost per square foot, even if it is a money pit that isn't a terrible deal.Comment

They could have easily blocked off large portions of upper levels of the stadium to avoid blackouts if that's really what they wanted.
Just because the cost per square foot is low doesn't mean it's not a terrible deal. There are 2500 sq ft houses in Detroit that are $500. There are reasons people aren't buying them.Just do the cost per square foot, even if it is a money pit that isn't a terrible deal.Comment

Who in Michigan can barely afford food? Other than the homeless in Detroit, I'm sure everyone can afford to eat. Not everyone is poor, btw.Comment
