So by that mentality, Marvin Hagler fought a bunch of guys who did nothing at Middleweight. While great (Duran, Hearns), they were irrelevant at 160 right?
And he lost to a Sugar Ray Leonard who not only did nothing at 160 but did nothing at all in boxing for years.
Congratulations, you just shat on a huge percentage of Hagler's resume.
P.S. I could give plenty of examples of smaller great fighters moving up to face bigger great fighters to dispose that silly little argument. The notion that you only get credit if you face natural contenders of your present weight class is ridiculous.Comment

But yes we agree, the difference was THE OPPONENTS. He didn't have the skills needed to compete in more than one weight class. However Floyd wasn't a monster at 147. Hatton made his debut at 140 when Floyd was still at 130-135, so weight was irrelevant.
Only historically would it have been better if the fight was held at 140, because then Floyd would've gotten the Lineal 140 Title........ which would've been against a weaker, drained Hatton.Comment

Well I disagree.
To nitpick and pretend like Hatton was a much bigger force at 140 than he would've been at 147 is simple nonsense, and doesn't make much sense scientifically.
Hatton has been draining himself for years to get to the 140 limit, if anything he was much healthier and in better fighting shape at 147 than he was at 140. The difference is, better opposition at 147 who were slightly bigger. It wasn't him, it was the opponents.
Now if you wanna argue that beating Hatton at 140 would've been more historically relevant, because Hatton was the 140 Champion, then you have a point.
But physically, Floyd beat a much better Hatton at 147 than he would've at 140.Comment

That doesn't take away the fact that he was physically a much better Hatton at 147 than he was at 140. He drained himself more to make those extra 7 pounds.

Sure you can beat an opponent and that opponent can go on to do great things afterwards, making your victory over him look that much better.
However you can also beat a fighter so bad to the extent of taking his soul, that he will no longer be the same. That's what happened to Trinidad. Hopkins dominance took his fighting soul away and he went into retirement. Barrera's dominant victory over Prince Hamed took his soul and he retired, eating and drinking himself into Obesity.
In Conclusion: IMO, beating a great fighter into retirement or Semi-Retirement that he is never the same >>>> Beating a great fighter and that fighter goes on to win more titles afterwards.Comment

But if you take the destruction factor into account, it's a moot point.

Naz retired cos he couldnt be arsed boxing anymore, was hurting his hands constantly and had made a shed load of money. Yet you act like his loss to Barrera (which wasnt even a bad beating) sent him into some deep depresion....lolComment
