I was just wondering... D'you guys not think Mayweather is being considerably over-hyped? I mean he's not yet ACTUALLY proved his greatness in the ring.

For example - In my opinion, the last time he fought someone of World class (back in 2002') many thought he lost.

Since then he's fought Victoriano Sosa, Phillip N'dou, DeMarcus Corley, Henry Bruseles, and Arturo Gatti. - None of these guys are what I would consider proper World class fighters.

Sosa - won quite a few rounds against Mayweather and did give him trouble.

N'dou - Better known as Phillip "the pudding" N'dou, IS NOT the same Lovemore Ndou that gave Mitchell/Witter/Cotto problems. Phillip N'dou is crap compared to Lovemore Ndou.

Corley - Has been called Demarcus "slop slop" Corley in the past, and he took Mayweather the distance and shook him up doing it.

Bruseles - Famous for being a Cotto sparring partner, I'd never heard of him before and don't think I'll hear of him again.

Gatti - Gatti's been a good fighter to watch over the years and been in some real wars... But with all due respect, He's not exactly a talented fighter. When he did step up in class 5yrs ago he got his arse handed to him by De La Hoya... He's had the crap kicked out of him by Ward three times since then, he's lost a load of fights, he looks a mess, was it really any suprise to any of you that Mayweather was able to run rings around him?

I've seen threads on this forum saying, "Ohh, how is anyone ever going to beat Mayweather???"... "No one all the way up to 175lbs can touch Mayweather!"

But let's be serious for a second... A lot of this is based on hype and what people think WOULD happen if Mayweather fought this or that person.

I'm just thinking maybe Mayweather's getting set up for a big fall?

Floyd fought Castillo again ane beat him soundly. And this was when he was changing his fighting style and working through the adjustments. You fail to mention that.

You descriptions of the other fights are purely biased. Floyd was never seriously challenged in any of the ones that you claim he was in. That's just your opinion. Plus Floyd is fighting all of these fights above his natural weight.

People base their opinions of Floyd on his natural abilities just as much as in the quality of his opponents. If you are a real boxing fan you can appreciate skill regardless of opponent.

I realy enjoy watching Mayweather fight... I appreciate his skills, and I didn't start this thread to try to disscredit him. It's just I learn't along time ago to ignore hype and concentrate on pure facts when betting on boxing... I don't wanna blow my own trumpet, but I'm very rarely wrong with my fight predictions, and usually the way I say a fight will pan out is what ends up happening.

I'm just not sold on Floyd at 140lbs yet... I'm not being biased or anything like that, I'm just looking at the facts of who he's fought.

Of course not,not unless you were a diehard gatti fan,but when you say you arent sold on him at 140,you should also take into account that gatti is known for coming into fights, big,hence no "unofficial weights" b4 fight time from HBO.So Im easily sold on floyds abilities up to 147,though there is of course more risk(not just based on gatti of though,I mean the guys you mentioned I do consider good,I mean chop lost a split Decision to Zab,zab is supposedly king now at 147,& he hurt cotto.Floyd also Beat castillo and corrales,how many people can say that

Well, we all get a bit senstive when it comes to our favourite fighters, right? But the thing is that opponents only tell you half the story. Remember that people were slagging on Hatton's quality of opposition before the Kostya fight, and how he got KDed by Oliviera, blah blah blah. The fight against Gatti was impressive because of Floyd's sheer dominance in the fight, not because of the quality of his opponent.

Think about it this way: when a top team in team sports utterly destroys a mediocre opponent it is still an impressive performance because of how much they dominated the opposition. Of course you don't know the whole story until they face another high-level rival but you get the idea that they're pretty good. To put it another way, Joe Louis' most famous fight is a destruction of a talented but aging Max Schmeling. People forget that Schmeling was well into the downside of his career by the time the rematch happened. But people credit Louis because he knocked Max around so easily.

Back in those days he was very f**kin' good!... But he just seems to have gone a bit stale over the last 4yrs (since the 2nd fight with Castillo).

Like I said, when judging fighters I only look at facts. I wanna know who they've beaten and how and when.

For example I look at Barrera since 2001' and I see Naseem Hamed, Enrique Sanchez, Erik Morales, Johnny Tapia, Kevin Kelley, Manny Pacquiao, Paulie Ayala, and Erik Morales AGAIN!.

And in the same sort of time Mayweather has fought Victoriano Sosa, Phillip N'dou, DeMarcus Corley, Henry Bruseles, and Arturo Gatti.

Just me personally I see a wealth of difference between calibre of opponent there. My way of dealing with facts would tell me that Barerra is P4P a better fighter.

p4p floyd looks good on and off paper, I think to win over the public he has to fight and beat someone of the likes a Kostya,yes even after his loss, Hatton ,cotto (not quite ready for PBF)or some to the top 5 140 lbrs

Yeah... Hatton used to get ripped to pieces for his level of opposition. (I used to think a little unfairly too!)... But he was on the way up.

I do think Mayweather vs Gatti was a bit of a missmatch, (I said that many times on these forums before the fight). I guess I get a little frustrated because I wanna see how good Mayweather really is, I don't believe I've seen Mayweather in the ring with a top 5 140lb fighter yet.

There's one way I could find out for sure... And that would be Mayweather vs Hatton, or Mayweather vs Cotto... Not Mayweather vs Mitchell! - I already know the result of that fight before it's started!

I'm sorry Bombardier but I do not agree with you on this opinion.

I think Roy Jones Junior spent years fighting weak opposition and looking totally dominant doing it... But unless you prove your greatness by actually fighting the best and winning, you'll end up with a tainted career (like Roy's).

Mayweather is in a fantastic position now to become one of the greatest fighters to grace the squared circle. It all depends what he does and who he fights over the next 4yrs... And I really do hope he makes the right choices.
