1983 Region 1 Team: David Gauvin (119), Mike Tyson (201), Mickey Ward (139), Marty Foley (156), Joey Negron (112), Ray Doughty (132) ...(plus two unidentified boxers)... at the 1983 U.S. Championships in Colorado...

David, Mickey and Marty were out of Massachusetts (I used to spar with Marty at Hagler's gym), Tyson from New York and Joey and Ray from Connecticut...(small world, saw Ray just last night at an amateur show here in Hartford, he's a judge now)...Joey Negron, a VERY VERY talented kid who never made it for different reasons...but the most talented guy in this photo by far)...

kid with blocked face and the kid with the hat, not sure who they are...
I wen't up there once to spar when I had just started training in Woonsocket RI. I got up there with my trainer and we found out it was Stevie Collins who needed the sparring and my trainer wouldn't let me in the ring. I did work out with him though and he was a great guy. Robbie Simms was there and kinda of acted like a jerk, but no biggie. It was pretty cool talking to Goodie and Pat Petronelli )both were alive than) who use to train my trainer when he was a kid. There were only a handful of fighters training that day, I thought there would have been more in such a prominent gym.

JAB, that must have been around the time I was going...because I used to spar Stevie and Robbie...also Cedric Parsons, Marty Foley, Dr. Terry Christle and Ricky Anderson back then...must have been mid to late 80's??

It was late '89 or '90 because I had only been fighting for a few months. There was another guy there that was sparring with Stevie and I think they said he was the South African national amateur champion. Does that ring a bell?

Hmmm...doesnt ring a bell...I know I was there frequently from 1986 to 1989...then and numerous time since, including earlier THIS year when I sparred 12 rounds (including 8 with an olympian, Boo-Boo Andrade)...so that's a span of 24 YEARS sparring at that gym for me...seen a lot of top fighters run through the on that time...great gym that looks EXACTLY the same today as it did in 1986...
