It was a little bit of both. His shoulder was probably hurting but not to the point that he couldn't continue. I think Rafa decided that it wasn't going his way and there wasn't much he could do to change the outcome so why risk very serious injury. I have no problem with what he did, hes given us enough to last a lifetime.
I believe it was hurt, but he also knew he was in for a beat down and had pretty much accepted defeat. To me, that's quitting. And after the fight, I see him pounding gloves with Lopez and people and raising his hand like he's a champion. Ehh, I don't buy it. Hurt yes. Hurt bad enough to call it off? No.
I've always said the Marquez Bros were crybabies. Warriors in the ring, yes, but the biggest crybabies in boxing when things don't go their way. He spent the entire fight complaining about rabbit punches that weren't even happening or that he created by ducking down.
I'm watching round 8 right now. The right hand is definitiely being thrown. He's just having more success with the lft, but he never stopped throwing that right at any point in this fight.
Why do people so soon forget all the great wars he's given us? In that final round last night, he was out on his feet and taking a horrendous beating, but his great courage kept him from going down.
Do some people want to see him brain-damaged or dead?
He was dependent on the left all night, we barely saw the right, he didn't fake anything.
With free use of the right, it's a different fight. He had Lopez all shook up with just a left-hook.

Honestly, I don't see it being that unlikely that he could've braved that storm and hurt Lopez badly in 9, 10 or 11 if he'd gone out. Lopez was outlanding him with power-shots 2-1 and still looked woozy at several points. One perfect left-hook would have turned it all around, and I don't doubt Rafa could have landed the big one because Lopez was walking onto them.
