Bruce Lee was a martial artist first, actor second, just like the other dude said.
The reason why there's no footage of him fighting in competitions/tournaments? Well, the east take their martial arts seriously, or at least use to. Martial Arts were used to defend yourself, and were designed to be lethal. Bruce Lee took this extremely seriously.
There is an urban legend that, when watching a full-contact karate competition, Bruce Lee was challenged by the then-champion, who had flown in from Japan. At this time (and even now), Karate, and other eastern fighting sports/martial arts weren't popular, and thus weren't televised. Even today, it's hard to find a lot of professional footage of Martial Arts, other than MMA fighting (UFC).
Anyways, the story is that Bruce Lee told the Karate Champ that he would give the Champ 30 seconds to knock him out of a circle roughly 1.5 metres in diameter. Then he would counter attack.
The Champ hit him for 30 seconds, usingthe usual punch kick combos found in Karate. Bruce Lee took it, then when the timer hit 30, he kicked the Champ, in the chest, and broke 4 ribs.
Dunno if this story is true, but if it is, there's no doubt the man is as dangerous as any.
Most of you here are American/European. I myself am Asian, and i live in Hong Kong. A lot of western fight fans think Bruce Lee was just an Actor. This is horribly incorrect. The following information is all fact, and is well known to people who know anything of Bruce Lee.
As a child, Bruce Lee had a habit of offending people, probably due to a big mouth and ****y attitude (like Ali). He was attacked by Triads (Gansters) on numerous occasions, and to be able to fight off Real Gangs at such a young age is quite a feat. Eventually, it got so bad that his family decided to take him to America.
Another known fact about Bruce Lee was that, against common misconception, Bruce Lee was not just a Martial Artist in the sense that he only kicked/punched. Bruce Lee also knew how to grapple. People who think that Roy Gracie would kill him in a fight, think again. Bruce Lee knew how to grapple, and mixed eastern and western styles often. He combined whats known in Greece as Pankration or Pangration, which is basically submission wrestling, with chinese wrestling, which focused more on shifting balance rather than force.
In a way, Bruce Lee was the actual Ultimate Fighter. He studied many different styles of fighting, and along with being masterly in skill, he also had a natural athletes body, gifted with amazing reflexes and inhuman hand, and also footspeed.
So don't diss.
