THE TRUTH
Vitali took the fight on just 1 days notice.
Vitali was clearly winning the fight 6-0 on all 3 scorecards at the time of the controversial doctor stoppage. Lewis was badly hurt and was staggering around the ring like a drunk, he barely survived everyround. Lewis was getting outboxed, outworked, outlanded and was hurt several times in the fight.
punches landed
Vitali 1,0000,000
Lewis 0
Lewis was exhausted, worn down and hurt from the accumulation of punches and was ready to get KTFO again, he collapsed onto his stool at the end of the 6th round, Vitali was the fresher of the two, he was a man on a mission and would've Killed Lewis for sure if the fight had continued.
All the fans at Staples Center cheered for Vitali and booed Lewis after the fight.
Lewis promised Vitali a rematch.
Vitali destroyed Kirk Johnson in 2 rounds and called out Lewis again in the post fight interview. The scared Lewis retired shortly after that fight.

I'm a huge Lewis fan, but this is the truth. However, Lewis wasn't in the best of shape for that fight, and he caused the cut over Vitali's eye and forced the stoppage. Saying that, a rematch would have answered any lingering doubts over who really won the fight that evening. I still believe Lewis would have won the rematch. He is an atg and fought in a much more competitive era than Vitali did.Comment

....Vitali took the worst beating of his ENTIRE career in the last 2 rounds of that fight.....the punch that opened him up was LEGIT so that means the TKO win was LEGIT.....Lewis came in really heavy and you could see he wasn't in the best shape he could be in....Vitali on the other hand was full of hunger and REMEMBER that he was fighting to save the Klitschko's reputation in that one.....so ALOT of things play a part in this one.....a rematch would've been cool tho.....the thing that gets me is that no matter what, no matter how you look at it....Lennox Lewis won that fight fairly!!....whats all the drama for?!?

The truth
Vitali was training for 8 weeks to fight on the undercard as was lewis to fight in the main event, they gave vitali the chance with lewis and switched the guys.
Lewis was on the verge of knockin vitali out, watch the fight for proofComment

I agree Lennox won fairly, but I disagree that he finished his career on a high. He finished his career ducking a threat.Comment

He was not very far from his prime. Physical prime and boxing prime are not the same thing. Lewis was a late developer, and under Steward's tutelage his increased ring intelligence greatly outweighed his loss of speed. His boxing prime was when he was around 35 years old; and even the 38 year old Lewis would have beaten the 28 year old Lewis.
The same is true for Vitali. He is 39, but is not very far from his boxing prime. The Arreola fight was probably his peak as a boxer. He is declining now but is still better than the fighter who lost to Lewis.
Lewis was out of shape in that fight, though.Comment
