if it kept on going vitali prob would had to retire because of the soft tissue damage he would have suffered. and its not like lennox didnt have vitali staggering around the ring either. he felt those shots and his face showed

I love how the "Lewis was out of shape" get's beaten to death.
Lewis was 7lbs heavier against Klitschko than he was when he dominated Tyson.
Klitschko was 7lbs heavier against Arreola than he was when he fought Corrie Sanders.
Did anyone say Vitali was dreadfully out of shape against The Nipple?

Great thread. Everyone knows this to be the truth. Lewis's post fight interview with Larry Merchant showed how insecure he was about the fight. He spoke like he knew he dodged a bullet.
Lewis was badly beaten in the fight. You could see his exhaustion when he slumped in the corner in the last two rounds gasping for breath.
Vitali was en route to a stoppage, especially knowing that his eye was at risk. I believe he was going to step on the gas and finish Lewis in the next 2 rounds.
The DR. robbed Vitali.
Furthermore, to add insult to injury, Lewis went back on his promise and rather than give Vitali the rematch, retired to become one of the worst commentators of all time.
Vitali>>Lewis.

He had a history of not being in shape for certain fights and under-performing and then doing far better in the rematch.
You can argue that he should have given Vitali a rematch, and I certainly don't dispute that Vitali deserved one; but to claim it was cowardice that stopped him doing so is ridiculous. And to claim that he would necessarily have lost a rematch if there had been one is also ridiculous, given his history of always doing much better in rematches. And to claim he was fully in shape for that fight, when he clearly wasn't, is the most ridiculous of all.
At the time, I remember being in two minds whether I wanted him to rematch Vitali, and the reason was not that I thought (as a Lewis fan at the time) that he'd lose, but precisely because I thought he would win. The way I looked at it was, if he beat Vitali twice and then retired, where would that leave the division? It would have a new #1 fighter who had just been beaten twice. How could he become a great champion after that? For the sake of the division, I considered it better that Lewis retired when he did.
That said, I also think that Vitali has improved a lot since then. He was green then, and gets hit far less now and controls distance much better than he did then. Prime for prime, I think Vitali-Lewis is a pick 'em fight. But if there had been an immediate rematch, Lewis would certainly have been considered the favourite.Last edited by Dave Rado; 10-21-2010, 02:24 AM.

I have never seen Vitali not ripped and ready but i dunno.. he looked great vs Arreola, but then Arreola is so many leagues down from the class of Vitali and Lewis its not funny.
I think the 10 day bit in the orginal post is a bit misleading.. as they both only had 10 days to prepare for each other due to other boxers pulling out.
Was a close fight that Lewis just won and i think people should just get over it, it's all right saying Ifs and buts etc but its still fantasy.
One thing i can agree on is that it put Lewis into retirement he or his mum saw it as too risky to continue to fight

THE TRUTH
Vitali took the fight on just 10 days notice.
Vitali was clearly winning the fight 4-2 on all 3 scorecards at the time of the controversial doctor stoppage. Lewis was badly hurt and was staggering around the ring like a drunk, he barely survived the 2nd round. Lewis was getting outboxed, outworked, outlanded and was hurt several times in the fight.
punches landed
Vitali 156
Lewis 102
Lewis was exhausted, worn down and hurt from the accumulation of punches and was ready to get KTFO again, he collapsed onto his stool at the end of the 6th round, Vitali was the fresher of the two, he was a man on a mission and would've KO'd Lewis for sure if the fight had continued.
All the fans at Staples Center cheered for Vitali and booed Lewis after the fight.
Lewis promised Vitali a rematch.
Vitali destroyed Kirk Johnson in 2 rounds and called out Lewis again in the post fight interview. The scared Lewis retired shortly after that fight.
Lewis turned down 30 million dollars for a rematch and retired like a coward because he knew he would get destroyed by Vitali.
Vitali dominated Lewis and scared him into retirement.

I'm not a fan of either Klitschko and Lewis. Vitali had an overall better fight, than the overrated Lennox, but the Briton placed a good punch, which resulted in a nasty cut. Simples.
