      **** another site reporting this:

Heavyweight title challenger Shannon Briggs is reportedly in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany. Briggs suffered fractures below both eyes as well as a concussion, after taking dozens of hard shots from WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night, but is responsive according to RTL. He also suffered a pulled tendon and torn muscle in his right arm.

Briggs was rushed to the hospital after the fight as doctors feared a possible cerebral hemorrhage after observing symptoms associated with neurological disturbances and drowsiness.

Referee Ian John-Lewis, who has received criticism for not stopping the fight, said he was within “one or two shots” of stopping it. “It was a heavyweight world championship,” he said. “These are tough guys and as long as a man fights back, you have to give him a chance.”

I agree with this here Briggs had no chance of winning and was just taking too much punishment for his own good his corner should have stopped it.

I hope Briggs is ok! He fought a courageous fight and took one of the worst one sided beatings over a 12 round fight in a long time. I knew something had to give after all of those shots he was taking. $500k isn't worth the damage he took in this fight. Get well soon Shannon...

Slight problem with that: Briggs wasn't fighting back!!!

That ref needs to be investigated. Shocking job.

The funny thing is that I've seen this ref stop a fair few fights in the UK prematurely. Needs to be consistency

I thought the fight should have stopped after the 8th round. Vitali was absolutely annihilating Briggs. From that point on, all Briggs did was take unnecessary punishment. His corner and the referee should be ashamed of themselves.

Its Briggs's corner imo, I thought the ref could have stopped it at several points and was screaming in the fight thread (which does nothing, but I had to say something) that this was sickening. Im a huge Vitali fan, but that was awful. I didnt want to see Briggs hurt seriously. The ref could have and should ahve stopped it, but I think that Sergei fight was playing in the back of everyones mind. Last second KO.

His corner has the duty to protect shannon, the problem is, if they thought they had any chance it was worth it to his corner to put him out there. This is the difference between a 38 yo former champ and a 28 year old contender. If Briggs was 10 years younger they would have pulled him out to fight agian, his corner clearly thought this was it for Shannon, and if he won theyd all get richer.

I think Vit liked Briggs. I think the prefight stuff was just Shannon trying to make some money and sell the fight. Vitali seemed to personally like Shannon and to me it looked like at the end he wanted the knock out but he didnt want to kill the guy on his feet.

How about we blame the commission for approving this fight? I dare you guys to look at BoxRec and see the 4 guys Briggs beat to earn his title shot.
