    Fat doesn't, but extra muscles around the neck traps helps.

      unfortunately friendo (op) lots of the people here dont know a thing about boxing

      and the membership will drop in half when floyd and pacquiao retire

      weight absolutely allows you to take better punches without wobbling and stay on your feet without being knocked off balance.

      punches to the chin send the head flying around and make the brain contort and collide with the skull. this is what essentially causes loss of consciousness in the clinical sense.
      size makes that more difficult
      bigger brain
      bigger skull
      larger dude
      better resistance to punches

      we're using academic language to talk about this stuff but it's certainly not an academic concept
      it should be intuitive... especially considering this is a boxing forum and we're supposed to be fans of a sport based on rendering men unconscious

      shannon briggs has a world class chin and he's huge
      and vitali doenst really **** like he used to

      his right hand used to be a lot straighter and had a lot more snap
      i blame age and his brittle hands

      he used to wear reyes gloves and knock guys unconscious and flat (reyes gloves dont pad the knuckles as much as other pro gloves)
      now he wears grant and breaks them down

      finally, if you need proof and wont listen to some of the posters who know what they are talking about go head to the bar

      clock the smallest guy in there
      and then the biggest
      and see which one take the better punch

      cmon guys...
      do some of you even watch boxing?

        Yes, more over large amounts of fat also help you absorb punishment better, especially to the body. Logic is that when someone has plenty of fat, they also have more fluid going round their body and in the skull, making it absord the shocks much better.
        Just a side note

          What explains Briggs getting dropped like a sack of grain by Jameel McCline while he was even heavier than against Vitali?

          Vitali just doesn't have the kind of power to put opponents out nowadays, and never truly did. Briggs would have been flattened had he taken as many right hands from Wladimir.

            yes thats because that person is naturally bigger, being over your natural weight does not help you takea punch better.

              The thing that makes Pacquiao smaller than other guys is not only his height, but his body frame, which is why he gets hurt more with body punches. But his neck, wrists, and ankles are big boned. It gives him more stability and power.

              He's just naturally gifted with an athletic body.

              His body type: The MESOMORPH

              * Athletic
              * Hard Body
              * Hourglass Shaped (Female)
              * Rectangular Shaped (Male)
              * Mature Muscle Mass
              * Muscular Body
              * Excellent Posture
              * Gains Muscle Easily
              * Gains Fat More Easily Than Ectomorphs
              * Thick Skin

              The Mesomorph Body

              The mesomorph has well-defined muscles and large bones. The torso tapers to a relatively narrow and low waist. The bones and muscles of the head are prominent. Features of the face are clearly defined, such as cheek bones and a square, heavy jaw. The face is long and broad, and is cubicle in shape. Arms and legs are developed and even the digits of the hand are muscled. The skin of the mesomorph is thick and the mesomorph tans well. The hair is heavy in texture.

                  KO's occur from the movement of the head being so fast that the brain smashes against the inside of the skull, if anything neck muscles to hold your head in place would help in taking a punch not the legs.

                    I see what you are saying and agree to a certain extent

                    but it requires more force to take a heavier man off his feet

                    the extra weight helps one absorb the blows

                    but one's bones and frame certainly are the foundation of the chin of a fighter

                    and i agree that a 200 lb ricky hatton isnt going to take punches much better than a 140 lb hatton in fighting shape
                    but he will be harder to take off his feet
