Castillo's situation when he was hurt, being strung on the ropes instead of knocked to the canvas, gave him no respite...unfortunate, but the referee doesn't choreograph the action, he's there to protect the fighters when they've had enough. Maybe Castillo had too much heart (or stubbornness or pride, whatever you want to call it) to go down when he was hit by the hook that really hurt him (I just checked, it's 1:06 remaining on Showtime's clock), and he ended up hung on the ropes taking shots instead of taking a count - that's just how it played out, but when Weeks stepped in Castillo was giving him no signs that he could protect himself, his head was flopping 'round on his neck dangerously and nothing else. There's no issue of leeway in that situation, because the situation is different to the one with Corrales. That was the definition of a righteous stoppage, IMO.

If you notice, BTW, the 2nd time Corrales goes down in round 10, after eating a 3rd left-hook in a row, it looks arguably like a self-preservation move to buy more time, removing the mouthpiece as he goes, knowing he couldn't keep taking shots while his legs weren't back under him - after the 2nd KD he seems more recovered and he avoids the first left-hook Castillo throws. That's not taking anything away from Chico, BTW, he was more than courageous. But it's possible that if Castillo had gone to the canvas like Corrales had, instead of being tied up on the ropes, he would've recovered and rallied.

And FWIW, far from being an aesthetic disappointment, I thought the finish of Corrales-Castillo I was plenty dramatic and iconic,

^^ 1st pic, Castillo's eyes are in orbit, his arms are limpening by his sides, not trying to block anything or throw punches back. Think of Griffith-Paret III, Paret tied up defenceless on the ropes taking shot after shot - if Paret had only took half the number of flush shots he took in that corner, it would've still been too many.

Then look at the expression on Weeks' face in the 2nd pic, he's saving the man before it's too late.

Corrales-Castillo I was a great stoppage and it's slightly dismaying for people to suggest otherwise.

Apologies if I seem overly serious. It just bugs me when people show crazy disregard for the safety of a clearly beaten fighter.
Hahha.......no worries....like I said on my original reply to you.......I get what your sayin' I personally had no beef with the stoppage......but some kats COULD (if they felt the need and wanted to put in the time and effort) make a case otherwise and come up with some reasons to let it go and see what happenes.......

Great fight, one of the greatest of all time but I do think something was taken away from it the way Corrales spit out the mouth piece over again to get more time.

I know it was a vet move and some guys liked it but I thought if he didn't do that Castillo KO's him and ends the fight.

Goes to show you what 1 punch power can do.

Castillo was done, man. That was a really, really good stoppage. He was hurt too bad (you can see it in his eyes when he takes those last shots strung up on the ropes) and he was only going to take more punishment because he wasn't going down. Boxing doesn't need guys getting permanently damaged. Be thankful for the stoppage.
Quoted for truth. Not only could you tell Castillo was done by the was he was rubbernecking against the ropes, and the way his eyes were rolling in his head - but Castillo himself said in an interview sometime after that fight that the stoppage was good. And that he was completely out of it, and had no problem with Weeks' stoppage.

          I still miss "Chico".

In the interview with Jim Gray right after the fight he was really upset with the stoppage.

I still can't believe Chico's gone. I actually cried in my car during my lunchbreak when I found out he died that day.

I don't recall the post fight interview, but I remember seeing him say that he wasn't upset with the stoppage in a sit down interview I saw with him, a while later.

I think it might have been done shortly before (or after) Chico's passing, and the 2 year anniversary of their first scrap.

I remember the tribute they did for him on "Friday Night Fights", when they toll'd that ringbell for him 10 times, I was just in disbelief.

Yeah, when I said he wasn't going down, I mean he wasn't going down until he was sliding down the ropes in a similar comatose-looking state to Arguello at the end of his first fight with Pryor.

Apart from being such an entertaining fighter, from everything I've seen, the guy was just charasmatic as hell.

Humble, hardworking, gracious, appreciative, humorous - we got to see a lot of different sides of Diego's character.

And in his passing, that's what struck me most. I mean, the fights were amazing. But on a human level, I just felt it was a loss.

He could've done so much more.

The day that fight happened alot of people complained it was stopped too early, i cant find my posts for that fight but i can say that Castillo was completely defenseless with his head back and his eyes rolling to the back of his head, he was definately in some serious ****.

Its funny, the day that fight came on it wasnt exactly big news at all. To be honest it was really just another run of the mill title fight that was gonna be on showtime that day, nobody had any idea the type of fight it was going to be because on paper it just wasnt promoted or discussed like that. Hardly anybody but a few people on here were even remotely interested
