Castillo was done, man. That was a really, really good stoppage. He was hurt too bad (you can see it in his eyes when he takes those last shots strung up on the ropes) and he was only going to take more punishment because he wasn't going down. Boxing doesn't need guys getting permanently damaged. Be thankful for the stoppage.

Corrales got knocked down, he was in bad shape but he was able to convince Weeks he wasn't done by getting off the canvas and giving affirmative signs. Even spitting out the mouthpiece, in its own way, was a sign that Corrales wanted to go on, that he had the awareness to buy a few vital seconds.

Castillo was strung up on the ropes taking punishment and unable to defend himself by that point, he wasn't going down. It's the official's responsibility to protect the fighters from unecessary punishment.

Have a heart, guys. They might go in prepared to die but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be protected from it.

Hhahah...........I know that's what I mean.....I can understand the stoppage but at the same time one could make the case that he gave Chico much more leeway to get back into it than he did Castillo....im just sayin.....regardless great fight!

Well, not really. That's my point, that Corrales, though knocked down, was able to look the official in the eye and give affirmative signs. Castillo's situation when he was hurt, being strung on the ropes instead of knocked to the canvas, gave him no respite...unfortunate, but the referee doesn't choreograph the action, he's there to protect the fighters when they've had enough. Maybe Castillo had too much heart (or stubbornness or pride, whatever you want to call it) to go down when he was hit by the hook that really hurt him (I just checked, it's 1:06 remaining on Showtime's clock), and he ended up hung on the ropes taking shots instead of taking a count - that's just how it played out, but when Weeks stepped in Castillo was giving him no signs that he could protect himself, his head was flopping 'round on his neck dangerously and nothing else. There's no issue of leeway in that situation, because the situation is different to the one with Corrales. That was the definition of a righteous stoppage, IMO.

If you notice, BTW, the 2nd time Corrales goes down in round 10, after eating a 3rd left-hook in a row, it looks arguably like a self-preservation move to buy more time, removing the mouthpiece as he goes, knowing he couldn't keep taking shots while his legs weren't back under him - after the 2nd KD he seems more recovered and he avoids the first left-hook Castillo throws. That's not taking anything away from Chico, BTW, he was more than courageous. But it's possible that if Castillo had gone to the canvas like Corrales had, instead of being tied up on the ropes, he would've recovered and rallied.

And FWIW, far from being an aesthetic disappointment, I thought the finish of Corrales-Castillo I was plenty dramatic and iconic,

^^ 1st pic, Castillo's eyes are in orbit, his arms are limpening by his sides, not trying to block anything or throw punches back. Think of Griffith-Paret III, Paret tied up defenceless on the ropes taking shot after shot - if Paret had only took half the number of flush shots he took in that corner, it would've still been too many.

Then look at the expression on Weeks' face in the 2nd pic, he's saving the man before it's too late.

Corrales-Castillo I was a great stoppage and it's slightly dismaying for people to suggest otherwise.

Apologies if I seem overly serious. It just bugs me when people show crazy disregard for the safety of a clearly beaten fighter.

I thought that back then and still do, but I never mention it out of respect for Chico.

He got away with it, so whatever.

I was moar mad at the time than I am now. That night I was really livid though, not only cuz' of the stoppage but the way Coralles got away with the mouthpiece debacle.

In hindsight it just adds an extra layer of ****e to the fight. I disagree about Castillo being done though, he deserved a chance to go down and get back up imo.

Maybe a candyass fighter like Dirrell would be a good candidate for a waving it off, but Castillo had proven his mettle and deserved a shot.

            Coralles got 4 chances. 2 kd's and 2 spitting the mouthpiece 2x.

I think Weeks interfered with a classic.

Another example is Pryor-Arguello I. Great fight, but Arguello was allowed to take shots he didn't need to take at the end and he was only fortunate that it didn't do for him.

I think by the time Castillo went down, in that situation, it would've been an unconscious slide down the ropes into a crumpled heap on the floor. He was taking flush shot after flush shot. Different from a hook or a twopiece landing you on your ass...you have a chance to recover from that, at least.

When guys are hurt past the point of return, it doesn't always result in a pretty KD. Referee's the one who has to spot that 'gone' look in a fighter's eyes. Weeks was right there, so I give him the benefit of doubt.

The mouthpiece thing is a great piece of folklore, talking point. Does it take shine off Corrales' win? I dunno. Probably evens out in the end with the weight circumstances of Castillo's revenge in the rematch.

Nah, he would've gone down. The next two punches would've killed him. That's about as perfect a stoppage as it gets.

Agreed. Great analysis in that first paragraph. And it wasn't like Corrales was done or something. If anything, Castillo was done and Corrales knew it. He had Castillo big time with a left at the end of the eighth. Castillo, ever the warrior, came out and took the attack to Corrales. But once Diego gathered himself, he was precise, powerful and accurate. Just incredible stuff.

Well said, as fans we often forget these are people in there and the head can only take so much.

These are people, not race cars. When you think of the amount of fighters dieing from boxing in the ring and the others with horrible brain damage, it would be horrible if I had to look at this fight and say why didn't he stop it.
