Has anybody done less, but asked for more than Paul Williams?

There are legit criticisms that can be made about Williams' abilities/performances and how he values himself in negotiations.

However, if boxing worked the way that it should, with boxers getting shots based upon who they beat (and not how popular they are, the promoter they are with or what paper title they hold) then Paul Williams would've gotten a shot at Pacquiao and/or Floyd by now.

I used to be a Williams fan back in 2007 and 2008 but I kept seeing him fight these older guys who had names but were aging fighters. He did good against an inactive, 1 fight in 3 years Winky Wright. I think the thing that has turned me off about Williams is the fact that he is one of these guys that HBO was and is trying to "build" into a superstar. You know how HBO will pick certain fighters to "hype" up with their commentators and always put them on BAD cards as the main events, i.e; Berto, Williams, Alexander, Ortiz. I mean these guys are pretty good and all but when the fights are remotely close, someone gets shafted in order for these guys to get another W on their records. I realize that HBO are making investments in these guys but as a result, these fighters develop this "superstar" mentality and think they deserve the world....Angulo was another one of these type of fighters.

I can see another ripoff if this rematch with Martinez is close again because Martinez is not an HBO guy....he just kind of came on the scene unexpectedly and has been picking up steam, the only problem is, he is doing it at the expense of HBO's investments. And with all his physical advantages over virtually everyone he will ever face, I'm not gonna make any excuses for this guy, he should be fighting at 160, 168, 175.....not 147 and 154. It's like the Klits coming down to 175 and fighting those guys.

First off. If you were a fan of Williams during those times you would know how hard it was for him to get good fights. Which is why he had to fight Phillips, Koele, Winky, etc. Guys didnt want to fight him.

What are pysical advantages if you donty use them? Have you ever seen Paul fight? When does he EVER sit back and fight tall?

Paul cant fight at 147? Why? Doesnt he already have a loss tthere to a guy who stands 5-8?

Why cant he fight at 154 Pounds? Does boxing have height classes now? What weight class should Tyson, Quawi, Funeka and Caballero shouldve fought at?

I mean afterall Tyson was 5-10. So he shouldve been a JMW right? Cab and Funeka should be at 154 or 160 correct?

Dwight was what 5-7? So he shouldve been at JWW or LW right?

So Hearns 147-154 resume should be wiped off the books. Because he was tall? I can spot a newbie boxing fan a mile away. Terrible post.

Boxing does not have height classes. Saying a guy who weighed in at 152 in his last fight should fight at 175 is laughable at best.

So what? If you ACTUALLY watch him fight you can clearly see he RARELY uses those advantages. Ever.

I am a Williams fan too, but that's actually one thing I hate about him. He gets hit way too often by smaller guys with shorter arms.

Too call him a bully is just ignorant if he can make the weight. But he really should fight more bully like with his height and reach. If he combined his physical gifts with his volume punching and improve his defense, he would be almost unbeatable.

I see what your saying about weight NC but he never seems intrested in fighting guys that have the same hight and reach he has either. He could get fights in higher weight classes but i don't think he wants anyone his size to be honest.

What are you talking about? So because a fight took a while to get signed its a crime now. It reminds me of the cry babies who said that about Shane-Mayweather.

That didnt get mentioned when Cotto-Pac and Hatton-Pac took forever to get signed.

The facts are: The fight is a done deal. The only people overreacting while they worked out the deal were NSB fans. At the presser Martinez and Williams said nothing about this fight being hard to get done.

I mean cmon those kind of statements bother me. Because they have no fact behind them. I mean did Williams not offer Martinez a rematch that he turned down to fight Pavlik? Now is it a crime fighting for all the belts? No. But we cant act like Paul didnt want to fight him.

Yes, Paul does himself claim to be the most avoided guy in the sort, has so for a long time.

And do not compare those fights with this one. Goosen has publicly said they didn't want the fight and basically took it as a last resort. This has been publicly stated.

Again, I don't have a problem with Paul going for the big money fights. No problem at all.......just don't say other fighters are scared just because they're in the position you wanna be in.

I mean I realize that in this day and age of Manny Pacquiao and such, it's expected for marginal fighters to get a shot at the top guys in the sport, but can someone explain to me what Paul Williams has done besides craft the greatest myth in boxing.

He beat Antonio Margarito. Barely. He got his ass whooped by Quintana. Avenged it, but 13 rounds to dispose of that bum? Got his ass whooped by Martinez. Robbed him. Got his ass beat by Kermit Cintron until Kermit took a page from Bernard Hopkins.

He beat Margarito clearly, not barely. Both Quintana and Martinez fight styles that are clearly very hard for Paul to deal with, but he did destroy Quintana in the rematch and he is getting in the ring with Martinez a second time. Bringing up Cintron is just pissing me off, Cintron dove out the ring like a punk.

Williams wanting 50-50 to fight Pavlik and dragging his feet on the Martinez rematch have made me a little less a fan than I was a year ago, but the man has been an excellent fighter for years and has been ducked by damn near everyone for years.

I think I'm on Burner's side here, the hate for Paul Williams is just f**king ridiculous and unfair now. Most fighters don't bother to get in the ring a second time with fighters they don't look good against, yet Paul did it against Quintana and is doing it again against Martinez. Give the man his f**king respect, even if you aren't a fan.

Thanks dude it's on ESPN2 and Yeah I know I really wanted that Pavlik fight I wanted to see him against a puncher with the same reach and height. I know you wont agree but both parties are at fault for that fight not going thru.

Al Haymon fighter who gets paid more than what he actually generates. He's a house fighter just like Mathed described. Developed a diva attitude after seeming like a guy who took on all comers.

And another reason to root against Williams is the fact that he has no intentions of defending the title if he happens to beat Martinez and he's the reason that this fight is at a catch weight when it didn't need to be.

Middleweight could potentially develop into a hot division with guys like Pirog, Fernando Guerrero, Lee, Kirkland and the other guys from 154 that will probably eventually move there like Lara and the likes. Williams has no intentions of fighting these guys because he's got a cherry picker mentality now.
