I don't think people get it. This is the first time that I can think of where the WBC sanctioned a fight for the "vacant" title where the top contender was fighting a champion of another organization.
They just stripped Jhonny Gonzalez of his WBC ranking because he set a fight for the IBO title and they warned Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. that he would lose his WBC ranking if he fights Cotto's WBA title.
By going in this direction, making Ward-Dirrell a title fight and making Froch-Abraham an eliminator, the WBC gets a sanctioning fee from both of those fights, instead of just receiving a single fee if they would have made Froch-Abraham a title contest.
