Why is this guy not taken more seriously???

James Toney is 19W-2L-1D-(2NC) in his last 24 fights. Only one opponent was a complete can with a losing record. Those two losses were to the same opponent - a top 10 contender whose fought in a number of title fights for different orgs.

His losses were to

Samuel Peters x 2 (record 26-1 and 27-1 at the time)
an undefeated Montell Griffin x 2 (record 14-0 and 25-0 at the time)
Roy Jones Jr (record 26-0 at the time)
Drake Thazdi (record 28-8-1)

Why does the boxing community completely dismiss him? I'm a boxing noob so please explain it to me just because on the surface it does seem a little unreasonable?

Is it because of the steroid fails? Please enlighten...without flaming!!!

they dismiss him because he could have been soo much more...instead he chose to be lazy and fat and not train properly.

5+ years ago he was hyped as a possible Klitschko challenger. Now he is completely and utterly shot. He wouldn't have beaten either Klitschko brother either. John Ruiz hit him at will when they fought.

Toney is and has been done for over 2 years now.

Because he's old, WAY overweight, shot, and hasn't been in a relevant fight since Peter beat his ass in the rematch. The better question is obviously why SHOULD we take him seriously?

yep, and that's coming from a fan of james toney. all the skills in the world, but his fat ass can't stay away from burger king. until toney takes training seriously, I can't take him seriously in any sport.

There have been some great aged and overweight fighters that have come back and achieved. One example that comes to mind is George Foreman who appears might be an excellent parallel (I know I could be wrong).

With the exclusion of Thazdi, James Toney has lost 5 fights to fighters who had a combined total number of losses of ONE FIGHT. That's it.

He may very well be past his prime and may never challenge for the title, but he is still winning fights, no?

It seems that everyone argues that he hasn't fought anyone relevant lately, but he claims that fighters are ducking him. Is there possibly any truth to that?

His record suggests that he can still fight a bit, doesn't it? If he was a young fighter and carried that last 24 fight record as if it were his first 24 fights would he not be considered in higher regard? (again, I'm not saying elite...but at least highly respected, no?)

He's fought some real fighters over that period. They weren't cans.

And he did tko Ruiz didn't he? (and yes, I know the fight was overturned which is why I asked if its the steroid use that makes everyone dismiss him)

Cmon bro that's a hell of a stretch. You're comparing Toney, who started out as a middleweight, to George Foreman, who started out as a HW and has one of the greatest if not the greatest comeback story in boxing history.
