People like this are crazy! dissagreeing with nothing to offer in return. pointless! dosn't have a clue. Parents feel its dangerous because of ignorance, they don't have any knowledge of the sport. They would not feel this way if the school system supports it. For the record American football has the most injures and deaths in school sports. Higher than amerture boxing, do your research before speaking. Promoting violence, are you kidding me. I see you don't follow high school sports at all. If you did you'd know the recent increase in on field and on court team fights in high schools. Mostly with rival teams but still they happen alot, in growing numbers. Most kids in Football suffer serious life affecting injures with little or no chance of recovery. Amerture boxing is much safer. Pros now thats something else. If organized right boxing programs can be a very fun learning experience. Teaching pride, humility, hard work, and respect.
How to make boxing the #1 sport in the world again.

So you're saying boxing would be more expensive because they wouldn't get sponsorship?Boxing will never be America's #1 sport again. The scholarships is a good idea but as far as elementary, middle and high schools that is was amatuer boxing programs are for and sponsored by the city and state dept of recreation. Yes these programs need to be more available and better funded but they are there.
Also boxing is actually more expensive than football, basketball and baseball. I say that because even though you have traveling AAU basketball and baseball teams the top teams are sponsored by nike, reebok and addidas so that is the big difference. Football equipment is provided except for cleats and there is not a lot of travel to that so its cheaper for parents to get kids involved in.
I'm not even going to tell you you're wrong and the fact that there would be more than enough sponsorship for these programs. Look at the 2008 Olympic team picture... They are sponsored by the Jordan brand. Everlast, Grant, Title, Reebok, and Adidas would be in on sponsorship.Comment

Maybe I didn't explain what I meant by sponsorship right or people didn't read it right. So you're saying boxing would be more expensive because they wouldn't get sponsorship?

With boxing the golden gloves national championships was just in Colorado. The fighters(maybe) but I know the trainers have to pay for their own plane tickets and hotel rooms and meals. There are many other different boxing tournaments all over the country that must be paid for by the fighters parents. This has nothing to do with the Olympics. Who doesn't know the athletes who make the Olympic teams don't have to pay for ****.
Now with AAU basketball and baseball. There is a very big AAU basketball tournament held every year out Vegas for only the elite teams these teams are sponsored so there travel and hotel rooms are paid for by the sponsors not by their parents. So that is what I am getting at by saying boxing would be more expensive.
Look it up PBF just a few years ago had to pay for the whole state of Michigan Golden Gloves tournament. This **** ain't cheapLast edited by tredh; 08-11-2010, 02:21 PM.Comment

Go back to before the 60s and it was always #1 or 2 with baseball in the US. For boxing to be #1 in the world, it would take too much. Matter of fact, it's asking too much of any sport to upend soccer.Comment

Imagine the NCAA Boxing Tournament (64 man format, single elimination). That would be awesome! Office pools, brackets, national network coverage. Screaming fans with painted faces cheering for their favorite fighter. The NCAA boxing champion would be an instant PPV superstar.Comment

You're talking about the elite teams at the amateur level. I'm pretty sure the equivalent to that in boxing carries sponsorship that tournament organizers acquire and pay for travel expenses, room and boarding, and gives money for food. Matter of fact, I know they don't pay for shit once they're on the national stage.Maybe I didn't explain what I meant by sponsorship right or people didn't read it right.

Sponsorship is the least of the problem. The biggest problem is public relations and how to integrate it into schools without getting the parents panties in a bunch. Motha****as banned tag and dodge ball, no way they just let boxing come back in to the fold without excellent PR.Comment

Dude you wrong I am not saying it couldn't be done but right now it is not being done. Ringside has a big a$$ national tournament every year I know for a fact that the fighters and trainers had to pay for their own plane tickets, rooms and meals. A fighter and trainer I know personally needed money to help pay there way to get out there. The only thing Ringside did was give a list of hotels that is giving discounts for staying there. People have to pay for this **** out of pocket these tournaments are not sponsoring these fighters and trainers. You're talking about the elite teams at the amateur level. In the 2008 olympics Gary Russell jr. passed out in his hotel room after trying to make weight and they didn't let him fight in the olympics. In a article in the local paper he talked about how bad he felt because of all the people that donated money so he could raise $10,000.Last edited by tredh; 08-11-2010, 03:06 PM.Comment

THE FIGHTER AND TRAINER YOU KNEW MUST HAVE BEEN ON THEIR OWN. My son and I are on our own aswell but we chose to be this way. When my son won golden and silver gloves this year we were offered a spot on Team Holyfield but turned it down do to the fact I would no longer be allowed to train him. If the schools chose to support this boxing program the goverment will have more than enough money , plus the donations from family, community, and others. Boxing equipment is much cheaper than football also. I know because I have kids involved in both. My 9y-old box and my 13y-old plays football. I spent over 4 hundred dollars on my son just for one season of football, while my 9y-old only 150 for the entire year. I speak from experince.Comment
