Why is it that ****iness is only accepted from sub-par fighters?

I think it's not so much about ****yness being acceptable depending on skill level.
In the pro wrestling world a 'heel' or villain was only as good as the hero.
So as far as your examples go...i dont think it's so much that ali, mayweather, calzaghe's ****yness ever became any less acceptable than other fighters....it's that they have/had a hero who is/was just as good which elevated their status.
Ali had good ol clean christian american Frazier opposite him.
Mayweather has Pacquiao
Calzaghe had Hopkins who's life story was a great example of the american dream.
Froch, or Malignaggi and Mayorga in particular who i believe to be much better villains than Mayweather or Calzaghe never had a matching rival to make them relevant enough for people to notice.Comment

Haha very true statement.
But, the thing with Floyd and Zags is that they claim to be the best ever but they dont take the fights everyone wants to see. How can you claim to be the best ever then turn down fights to the top contenders?Comment

I think when the ****iness comes from a sub-par fighter it's like a big inside joke in the boxing community. Nobody really takes them seriously, but when it's someone that is worth a damn it tends to threaten people's nostalgic attachment to fighters from the past and they might not like that, whether consciously or sub-consciously.
Plus, it's just really more fun when the ****iness comes from sub-par fighters. Like most recently when Molina knocked out Lundy on FNF. That was good times.Comment

I dont think those three lacked a villian. Everytime they step up they look like **** is the problem. Froch just happened to be the lucky one. We wont remember his boxing in 10 years just his arrogant excuses as to why he looked like the average boxer that he is.I think it's not so much about ****yness being acceptable depending on skill level.

Zags spanked hopkins right? Floyd spanked Mosely right? I know this is a "What have you done for me lately?"business. But damn, Joe retired undefeated and Floyd's fight was a couple months ago. Give him time. Pac is going to be an easy fight anyway.Comment

Naseem Hamed is 10x ****ier than Ali ever was and noone ever really remembers and most found it a bit amusing just as it was amusing out of mayweather at 1st. problem was his only real challenger who got the better of him was pretty ****y himself rather than the polar opposite.I dont think those three lacked a villian. I'll do you one better. Hamed was a true hype job clown. I dont care who argues that point. He was never entertaining to me and just made boxing look silly. Believe it or not he has posters that say Hamed was a great champion. Could you imagine him even in the same ring with Mayweather back then? It would have been a tragedy.Naseem Hamed is 10x ****ier than Ali ever was and noone ever really remembers and most found it a bit amusing just as it was amusing out of mayweather at 1st. problem was his only real challenger who got the better of him was pretty ****y himself rather than the polar opposite.Last edited by studentofthegam; 08-04-2010, 02:15 AM.Comment

Like I said...it's all a matter of perspective. Just remember the mark of a truly great fighter is excelling over a truly great rival. Ali would not be as revered as he is today if it werent for Frazier.I'll do you one better. Hamed was a true hype job clown. I dont care who argues that point.
