Here's the thing about Jacobs (and it's not only him); he never fought tough 4 round fights. He didn't fight tough 6 round fights. He had one semi-tough 8 round fight and one tough 10 round fight. This isn't very uncommon in this era of boxing. In Jacobs' case, I don't think he got ****y or lost focus. I think he just got a false impression that his natural athleticism and technical training was going to carry the day against just about anybody.
The Smith and Pirog fights (along with the Walker fight) showed that Jacobs still had some work to do, but it hardly proves anything about where he'll eventually end up. At a certain point, Jacobs is going to get in more tough fights. The question is if Al Haymon/GBP are going to help him get prepared for those tough fights or if he's going to accidently stumble upon them like he did on Saturday night.
The problem is that a 20-0 17KOs record attracts more fans and attention than a nice gradual progression up the ladder. That's why guys like Andre Ward, Danny Garcia and Demetrius Andrade don't really get the type of hype and articles written about them that Jacobs has had written without beating anyone of note, but if you look at Ward, Garcia and Andrade they've got tough 6 rounders. Ward and Garcia have fought tough 8 and 10 rounders. Those fights get you ready for the tough 12 round title fights.
It's really difficult to win when your first tough fight is a 12 round title fight. IMHO, what happened to Danny Jacobs was that he just never went 6 hard rounds and he was in a situation where he was expected to go 12 hard rounds. He wasn't able to do it, but that doesn't mean he never will be able to.
