Atlas told ESPN.com he didn't think Povetkin was ready for the fight and had recommended against taking it.

"I think he deseves the chance to develop," Atlas said. "I'm in the middle of training this kid, which is obviously an important time in his life for the future of his career. I'm doing my job. I am not moved by the title fight and what the biggest fight is out there. My job is to do the best job I can for the fighter and to make sure he is the best he can be when he's in a situtation to fight, whether to fight Klitschko, Samuel Peter, [Tomasz] Adamek or Joe Shmoe.

"I am not controlled or dictated by anything other than that. I told him from the beginning I wanted more time. I was never really for the fight right now. Let me have more time with him. Does the mandatory dictate when he fights or do the circumstances of him having the best chance to win the fight?"

Atlas said he understands Povetkin is passing on a career-high payday of $2,078,250 -- his 25 percent cut of the purse bid. However, "I'm giving up money too," Atlas said.

"I get 10 percent of that, but I decided the most important thing was to do what was the best for the fighter," Atlas said. "My judgment was is the fighter ready for this moment? My opinion was more time would be good."

Just wow. So Atlas thinks the mandatory will be in place for all eternity obviously.

I'm pretty sure he's playing the David Haye "wait for the Klitschkos to get old" game.

i gave sasha the benefit of the doubt.ive travelled overseas many times & thought about the issues of jetlag, time change,ect...but if he never signed the contract, wlad had every reason to pull the plug.i got no beef with a sam peter rematch although wlad is much better now then when he fought peter a few years back.

Sounds like selfish Teddy Atlas was only thinking about himself in this. Was probably more worried about his own ego taking a hit with a humiliating loss and couldn't even handle the thought of it

Phuck Atlas he's probably the biggest pos in boxing and the fact that Sasha is ****** enough to actually be manipulated by Teddy into passing on this makes me lose all respect for him. Povetkins a *****

Povetkin is just a little *****. David Haye at least has other options: he can make a tons of money fighting jorneymen like Audley, he has a belt, he has earned a lot of money already, and he is younger than Povetkin!

Povetkin isn't a big name even in Germany, his purses aren't that big, he is almost 31 y.o, and due to IBF rules, he will be excluded from IBF TOP-10 for refusing to sign the contract. So, it takes 2-3 years to reach a mandatory position again! He will be 33-34 y.o. then - not a young HW even by today's standards. His managers said 2 years ago that he wasn't ready, that he will be fighting tall and hard-hitting heavyweights on regular basis, what will make him better prepared for Wlad. Instead, he fought 2 times per year against small, feather-fisted bums. Well, his best opponent since January 2008 was Jason Estrada - feather-fisted jorneyman, who is only 5'11'', two of his opponents - Taurus Sykes and Leo Nolan took the dives in their fights against Povetkin (not to mention, they are small, feather-fisted bums as-well)
I simply can't understand Povetkin's srategy: what are they trying to do?
Wait 5 years untill Wlad retires? Haye, at least, seems to have some strategy - he is trying to make a lot of money taking a minimum risk. Povetkin doesn't

                  ^^^
                  - Povetkin is actually rated # 1 in the WBO (Vova's belt), Tua #2 (who just got the gift tie vs Barrett)

                  - Povetkin is rated #3 in the WBC (Vitali)

so in all likelyhood he could become manditory once again in another org rather soon, certianly not in 2-3 yrs like you said.

                  That said, phuck Sasha.

I think that $250,000 is an error, although not great. It should have been about $207,000It was Teddy who said $250,000.

I would think that $250,000 wouldn't mean all that much to Teddy. We're inclined to overlook the real fact that these trainers, although they look as if they haven't a cent, earn very good money, and in Teddy's case, he's had lucrative job as a commentator for many years, as well as frequent guest and expert appearances on TV.

Look at the Roach for example. Did anyone ever see a more indifent looking creature. Yet, he managed to get a 10% paycheck from every Manny P. fight. He must be worth multi-millions. And he cartainly doestn't, by his appaearnce, spend much of it.
