  • Comments Thread For: Monte Barrett – A Tribute to a Career Well Fought

By Thomas Gerbasi - In boxing, not everyone can be Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather, or a decorated world champion. There are those needed to be foils for such athletes, to be the ones on the other side of the win-loss ledger as the path to glory beckons.

That doesn’t make these boxers less important, or less worthy of our attention. In fact, its fighters like heavyweight Monte Barrett who are often the most interesting characters in the game. They’re ones who have given their all, told their stories, and shed more than their share of blood, sweat, and tears for our entertainment.

On Saturday night in Atlantic City, Barrett will make what he says is his final appearance in the prize ring against David Tua. As far as legit retirements go, boxing has a horrid track record, but for the time being, let’s put that aside and accept the New Yorker’s claim for what it is, one last walk up those four steps. Whole-hearted thanks to you Sir.
As you can tell, im a Tua fan (and fellow Kiwi) but i didnt know much about Mr Barrett except the usual boxrec browse.
After reading your article i know now that Barrett is just the sort of fighter i like and respect, the reason i enjoy dedicating a lot of time to boxing, just like David Tua.

The guys that just go out there and give it the best shot they can, never disrespecting, never make excuses for bad performances and always humble in victory.
Thanks again for the chance to read on Monte and lets hope for an entertaining fight night come Sunday (or Saturday depending where you are!)

    Tua by 10th round TKO

kudos to the writer of the article for the good read. Monte was always one of my favorites. Always the big underdog who pulled off some good upsets. He was the gatekeeper of the division for a solid 5 years & was able to get 2 world title fights out of it. He also was a construction worker before his Kirkland fight & maybe after he retires he will go back to it. I always wish he came here to Edmonton last summer. He was to fight sheldon hinton at our outdoor baseball stadium but the fight never happened for whatever reason. Hinton claims injury for the postponement but he landed the solis fight on short notice & it was on showtime so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where the $$$ was....good luck Saturday to monte & wish him the best in the future. I'm hoping for a great fight but I think I am parting with 25000 points...

"If I shoot for the moon, maybe I'll hit a star," said Monte.

Too bad he ended up hitting the top rope of the ring instead. He'll be forever remembered for that. Not to mention how silly Haye made him look that night. And then to downgrade the entire performance by Haye now being labeled as a coward. (Only time I paid much attention to Monte anyway.)

Why comment if you never watched any fights but that fight? Besides it's not a secret barrett was treated like a second class citizen by the haye camp. Barrett had a hard time adjusting to everything in England.jetlag, the food, being in a foreign country(something he never did before this fight). They put him up in a holiday inn(cheap hotel) & gave him a $50 meal allowance...that's cheap! This was a big showcase fight for david & he treated Barrett like a tomato can & surprised him with this stuff only after he arrived to England. Haye is a class above Barrett regardless but it showed how little respect haye shows people. It's no surprise with his recent antics of playing Houdini...
