Nonito would have to play the counter puncher to win. After seeing what Montiel did. If Hozumi hasn't fixed that guard of his, then Nonito could time the left straight and counter with his own left hook, like he did with Darchinyan. If Nonito's power is carried up then he could possibly kayo Hozumi if he catches him a couple of times like that or with one really big left hook.

Hozumi. I think has the bigger advantage. He isn't small. Nonito isn't used to fighting guys his size or larger. Nonito hasn't even fought a guy equal in speed, footwork, power, or skill to himself. So fighting Hozumi would bring in alot of unfamiliar ground. Hozumi has deceptive power, he looks like he punches without power but when he lands, it exploads. The thing here is that the speed. Nonito may lose his speed, since he will be heavier. While Hozumi is more than comfortable at 118 and has a ton of speed. He may beat Nonito to the punch. It would also be interesting to see how Nonito deals with an opponent that can actually keep up with him. I can see Hozumi winning a decision or a knockout. Nonito may not have the same punch resistance or speed at a higher weight, all while considering Hozumi won't be at a significant disadvantage like Nonito's past opponents

It's difficult to break down because Nonito has spent so much of his career over-achieving. Don't get me wrong, I like Nonito but he has spent alot of his career beating up on guys much smaller than him, who can't keep up with him, and who don't even come close to his skill level either. Even Darchinyan, he is much smaller than Nonito, although he is game Darchy had a significant size disadvantage. There is no telling if Nonito will fall apart with an opponent who matches him in every single way, and may even exceed his ability in certain ares because so far Nonito has gotten by fighting guys who are heavily out-matched.

Naturally I will go for Hozumi though. That's hands down. I won't root against him. I hope he has fixed his right hand guard lately in training.

agree. nonito is slick, fast, athletic & has great reflexes. if his chin holds up at 118 he beats anybody.

What Nonito can get is outworked and roughed up. That's why I'd be leaning to a Perez if they fought because he'll take it there, he has an iron chin, is strong like bull, and will put up numbers. I might favor Mares too, kid is the goods.

too much speed with both hands and feet.
I see Hasegawa getting tagged with Donaire's main weapon the lft hook all night cause he keeps his right hand low.He's wide open for it.

i would actually favor donaire greatly against perez because perez is a straight forward aggressive fighter which suits donaire's counter punching style. mares is a much dangerous opponent for donaire in my opinion.

Same could be said for Donaire.

You don't know how Donaire's speed will be moving up. Floyd lost speed and power moving up. So even the best of them can lose speed and/or power when moving up in weight. Where as Hozumi is more than likely the fastest top 118lb fighter, Anselmo is up there too, he may be equal to Hozumi.
Donaire doesn't have too many weapons, he has the left hook. That's the biggest weapon and his only legit, no guess work threatening weapon against Hozumi.

Getting tagged all night makes no sense. Because that isn't how Donaire works. He finds the distance and timing first, which will take time because he would be in counter-punching mode to do so.

Being stopped by Montiel doesn't mean he will be stopped by everyone. We have to see if Nonito carries all his attributes as he moves up. If he doesn't then things drastically change. You guys are lucky I like Nonito, because you guys make it easy to want to see someone's downfall.

But go ahead and count out Hozumi. I learned my lesson. You all can count people out now but don't act surprised if he slips up.

My picks aren't set in stone until like a week until the fight. That's why I said might, after seeing kid take all that pressure from Perez, do everything he did well, and still win the championship rounds, I can't go against him right now. Especially seeing he has a solid jab, skills, and would be able to outwork Donaire.

The main reason I would pick Perez is that Donaire's had he most trouble against those types, but lesser versions of Perez. Look at the Concepcion and Maldonado fights, granted Concepcion weighed 4.5 pounds more, but he's a limited straight-forward fighter.

Perez can be a swarmer or a boxer. He's extremely strong, has an iron chin, top notch stamina, an underrated counterpuncher when he needs it, solid power and brings heavy pressure.
