Comments Thread For: Differing But The Same Result: Duddy, Fury Need Changes

Manchester's Tyson Fury and Ireland's John Duddy both faced their own personal moments of truth this past weekend when taking part in make-or-break contests. Fury, 22, rematched John McDermott for the vacant English title in order to eradicate the pong leftover from their controversial first encounter, in which both men fought on roughly even terms only for referee Terry O'Connor to turn in a 98-92 scorecard that completely flew in the face of what everyone else had witnessed. Duddy, 31, took on Junior Chavez Junior in a contest between two men with massively inflated records - now 29-2 (18) for Duddy and 41-0-1 (30) for Junior – in careers more reliant on manufactured hype than in-ring prowess.

Good article and an enjoyable read.

It's hard to know what to think about Duddy's future. He's tough as hell and very aggressive, but those qualities alone are not enough

If seems like Margarito will face Pacquiao or Cotto next, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing him against Duddy at 154. Two guys who just want to stand toe-to-toe all night long...lovely.

I disagreed with the stoppage in the Vera-Lee fight, but Andy Lee did seem to tire that night and so Duddy has a chance to make things interesting down the stretch should they meet. I think Lee would probably win comfortably but the fight would make money and be entertaining so hopefully it gets made.

Come to think of it, Duddy vs Vera would also be a very good scrap.

So I think there are opportunities for him to fatten his wallet and entertain the fans, but a world title is almost certainly beyond him and if he doesn't want to just be a B-level fighter then he probably should retire.

I don't think Fury is that talented (fast hands for a big guy, but not that much else) but he could be a better boxer than he is. If nothing else, a guy that size should have an effective jab.

His constant changing of trainers baffles me. Hughes and McCracken know the sport very well, but I can't see any improvements in Fury despite him having worked with them. He needs to get with an experienced trainer and stick with him for a year or so. He apparently wants someone who will be on his case everyday making him work. Maybe he should see if Norman Stone is available, I'd like to see that guy working the corner again and he has a heavyweight track record.

I remember reading that Buster Douglas' trainer motivated him by saying 'Tyson is 5'11, you're 6'4. Are you really gonna let someone that much smaller than you kick your ass?' Size isn't everything, but it matters, and Fury is big enough that he should be able do a bit better than he has so far.

Ah well. I'd like to see him succeed, but I can accept him for what he is: entertaining, limited and worth watching despite being unlikely to go above British title level.

Yeah your making good points, but I would personally say that both fights were absolute wars, in terms of abuse, great action and to be honest all 4 fighters involved showed courage heart determination and will...which should be praised v.highly, i'd personally rather have all these attributes than the skills, for the simple reason to an extent skills can be taught, but all i mentioned above cannot!

Ill be honest, Fury is only half-decent because of his freakish size, he has so much to learn if he wants to get anywhere.

Chisora is only 6'1", 8 inches shorter than Fury but i think he makes light work of him regardless, and Chisora isnt that great either

Both fighters need one big change: they need to find some talent.
