I don't know if he is the best trainer of his generation. He is a very good trainer but his fighters tend to lose when they face elite competition. You put up manny as an example. Do you think his success is all roach or does the fact top rank matched him properly also play into it.

freddie is great in several ways. He is a good trainer and he also knows what are the right fights to build his fighters confidence and make them look good. Its smart because when his guys do face someone that poses a difficult style or a challenge they are already confident in their abilities and preform well. You won't see one of Freddie's guys thrown in with a bad style match too often because he makes sure they take baby steps before they tackle the real challenge. When he can't train anymore Top Rank should give him a job as a match maker for prospects.

yeah exactly we can never really know who the best trainers are there are somany other factors that can lead to a fighters success, natural talent, careful matchmaking, input from cutmen or assistants and so on but I think its pretty obvious that he is an "elite trainer"

Careful matchmaking? Yet he's on steroids, climbing up divisions, and destroying opponents that has even Floyd Sr. shook? Floyd Jr. calling him extraordinary? Uncle Roger saying Pacquiao got big balls fighting cotto? It's either one or the other. Either he is on steroids dominating bigger fighters that no one thought possible (except *******s) just a year or so ago or he is overrated and matched carefully with his opponents throughout his career and as he moved up 7 divisions. Which is it?

Smart matchmaking as he has moved up. No one is dissing him. Why do you take any legitmate question as a diss?

It's not a diss, but it is discrediting his achievements. Same goes when people say Floyd hand selected each fight (he's his own boss). People say he cherry picked. Smart matchmaking is basically saying you pick and choose. What I have posted is valid, brought in facts of what 'respectable' boxing personalities/trainers have said. Just stating my opinion in all this (this is a message board), don't take it personal.

I'm not discrediting Pac achievements. If you take it like that its on you. Never taking it personal just don't know why any question about pac is equated to disrespect by his fans on this boord.

Smart matchmaking is not just who you pick and chose. For example Manny was smart to fight Morales again instead of Zahir Raheem. More money less risk. When manny fought david diaz he was not the best lw in the world. But he got equal money for less risk. Cotto at 145 instead of 147. ODH at 147 instead of 154. Hatton after floyd Ko'd him. Big money fights where manny's team used its negotiating position wisely.

He's definitely a great trainer, he manages to maximize the potential of almost every fighter that he has trained.

                      There's no doubt he's a great match-maker.

A great trainer? I'm not so sure.
