Why are people saying Cotto is an option for Floyd?

This fight isn't a legit fight anymore.....Cotto is not an elite fighter and hasn't been one for a few years now. Plus Bob Arum would never let it happen. So why are people on this board throwing his name out as if it's an option? If Pacquiao or Floyd fights Cotto, they get no credit.

My feelings exactly, and this is no attack on Cotto either. There was a time when this should have happened, now isn't the time. If Cotto can get a few good wins and show some improvement under Steward, then I'm down, right now I have little to no interest.

Another thing, sometimes I feel like I overestimated Yuri Foreman, I didn't even make a pick as to who would win. But I was impressed with Cotto's ability to cutoff the ring, right hand (Which he rarely uses), jab, but as for opponent, maybe Yuri was never really that good? Not to take away from Cotto's performance.

Where I'm getting at is that he may improve under Steward, but isn't it a bit too far fetched to think someone who took those hellish beatings against Margarito, Clottey, Pacquiao, even against Mosley he ate alot of overhand rights....would actually bring anything against Mayweather? It's crazy when you think about it that way.

Cotto is still elite, look he made Yuri look like an amateur. I want to see him against Mayweather. I think he's got a shot against him.

It's a money fight. "Money" Mayweather and Pac fight only money fights. Cotto vs Mayweather would do huge numbers. All of Floyd's fans would watch and who of the PR community wouldn't buy Cotto vs Pretty Boy.

Cotto vs Floyd does over 1 million buys at the PPV. I would say it could even get to 1.6 million buys.

my point exactly. People would watch Floyd vs cotto en masse. Styles make fights and Cotto (despite having many flaws) is a good puncher and times the left jab very well, he was albe to neutralise SSM speed early in their fight and Shane is much faster than Cotto and has superior reach.

It's a compelling fight and it will sell. Floyd did 1.4 m PPV buys with lesser draw in SSM with only GBP behind it. Now think about GBP replicating their promotional efforts for a Cotto fight then add Arum and Top Rank's promotional savvy to the equation............

also if Floyd beats Cotto soundly his case for being the rightful # 1 P4P strengthens considerably.

me too, but i feel he won some rds and would do much better with a rematch and perhaps a leg to stand on. Personally i wouldn't mind seeing it again.

i feel ya, but it would only be acceptable to me at 154.

Still wouldnt be a helluva win though, almost would make it seem as if mayweather actually did dodge him if he fought cotto now after pac and margarito beat him.

(i know floyd didnt duck cotto, just sayin)

                  You guys are absolutely right!!..

I say if it isn't Pacquiao, it should be one of the following:

                  Nate Campbell
                  JMM II
                  Paulie Malignaggi
                  Matthew Hatton
                  Cory Spinks

that's the fighters that are at this "elite stage" and ready to give Mayweather a RUN for his money..

cotto is one of thse fighters that you think should be right up there, be he just isnt these days. a fight with mayweather would probably be good for a few rounds for the fans, but i cant see anything other than floyd systematically breaking cotto down. cotto should try and get a fight with williams, he could snap him like the twig he is, and his confidence would be sky high again.
