Apparently only 3 boxers are a box office draw in America

And only 1 of them is American. It seems that Cotto, Pacquiao, and Mayweather are the only 3 guys that can attract an audience in America. Everyone else seems to come up well short of these 3. Ward is thought to be a good draw, but his fight against Green was almost called off because of slow ticket sales. Outside of the big 3, no one else seems to be able to crack the 10,000 mark in paid attendance. Arreaola and Vitali had about 7,600 in paid attendance, Williams vs. Cintron had a little over 2,000, and Berto vs. Quintana had a little under 1,000 in paid atttendance.

Compare these numbers to the big 3. Cotto's last fight had an announced paid attendance of a little over 22,000(this may be inaccurate as no official numbers have been released). The live gate on that fight was estimated to be around $3M. Pacquiao's fight against Clottey had a little over 36,000 in paid attendance(41k total showed up). The live gate on that fight was a little over $6.5M. So those two fights did almost 60,000 in paid attendance and brought in almost $10M at the gate. Mayweather's fight against Mosley was in a much smaller venue, but had excellent numbers. The paid attendance was a little over 14K(still almost twice as much as any other fight not involving Mayweather, Pac, or Cotto in the U.S). However, despite having a crowd about 1/4 the combined size of Cotto and Pac's most recent fights, the live gate actually was higher than both those fights combined pulling in a little over $11M.

So there's good news and bad news. The good news is that whether in a casino or a large venue; Cotto, Pac, and Mayweather have shown that boxing can generate large dollars in America. The bad news is that everyone else outside these 3 have failed to prove they can bring in big money anywhere in America. Will the tide ever turn in the U.S?

    Who cares?

How many other sports could get fans to pay $50 for 1 event? Of the average 10-15 million that watched the Finals... How many of those would pay $50 for it?

Can any other sport draw 50-60K and 13 million viewers in a country of 80 in Germany?

Or 1+ million PPV buys at 5 AM in the morning in the UK?

Or the incredible number of people that watched Kameda-Naito and regularly watch the Kameda brothers in Japan?

    Pacquiao in the Phillipines?

    Adamek-Golota in Poland?

I could keep going, but I'm gonna leave it at that.

I think this is an improved version of the last thread. Less aggressive and biased too.

The only gripe I have about that, which is when we compare National stars in other countries to Stars in America. Is that in America we are treated to the best of almost every major sport. If we didnt have the best basketball,Football,Baseball,Golf players in the world maybe we care more about sports like Boxing,Soccer,Rugby.

The same is with boxing; You know why 13 million viewers tune in to a adamek fight in Poland?

#1. What other sports do they have to watch?
#2 How many decent Polish Boxer have there been in the last 20 years?

Is Adamek p4p a better fighter than a guy like Pwill or Bhop? Hello no, but not even 3milion people watch thier fights. We have great fighters to watch in every division. We dont have to dedicate all our support to just one fighter like Poland.

Same goes for Pac and the Philipines.

Dont even get me started on Germany, go look up german history or really eastern europe mainly the balkens. Youll understand why the Kiltchs have such a following aside from my reasons.

Theres a reason these fighters come to America to fight...NOONE GIVES A **** HOW MANY PEOPLE WATCH A BOXING MATCH IN CHINA, IF YOUR ANY GOOD YOUD BE BOXING IN AMERICA WHERE THE BEST FIGHTERS ARE.WHERE THE REAL MONEY IS!

Oh and How can you compare a sport in which there are 32 teams playing 82 games a season 6 months out fo the year to a sport where theres about 3 major fights a year if were lucky?

If they didnt show a single basketball game or football game on TV except the finals or the super bowl, they could charge 100 bucks for the PPV and sell 10x+ what the average Boxing match sold In PPV. Dont be so silly.

            mike jones
            Antonio escalente

Why not? He's already incredibly popular in Mexico and he hasn't even fought anyone good yet.

Oh dear you cannot be serious with this comment? "America is the best at almost every major sport".. then you name sports that no other countries take seriously and say maybe you'd care about football (yes proper football), rugby and boxing if you were any good at them? Haha that's classic!

                    Major sports...In no order
                    Soccer
                    Football
                    Baseball

                    Tennis
                    Track and Field

Those are the top sports. Of them all the majority of the best players/teams/athlethes are american and most of the top players in their respective sport are american except soccer.
