Comments Thread For: Mercante Jr Does Not Regret Allowing Foreman To Continue

NEW YORK - Last Saturday night, Arthur Mercante Jr. was the referee for the first professional main event at Yankee Stadium in over 33-years, officiating a ninth-round, technical knockout victory by challenger Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 knockouts) that dethroned WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion Yuri Foreman (28-1, eight KOs). He allows him to continue fighting with 1 functional leg even after they throw the towel in, but stops it because of a body shot? Bad call in my opinion. Yuri was a wounded animal in there after he twisted his knee.

I saw the fight at 5am here in the UK and have to give much respect to Foreman and the referee. He was the world champ coming into the fight and didn't quit, realising the fans watching live at the stadium or on TV paid to see the fight. Cotto won fair and square, but Foreman showed heart, courage and grit which was previously untested. Great fight.

Foreman did show alot of heart in there. Especially when he started going toe to toe even after he hurt his knee.

I still think the fight should have been stopped when his corner threw in the towel though. Legs are one of the most important aspects when you're in the ring. Foreman was reduced to 1 functional leg.

The peoples ref had me cracking up on the 2nd fall down in the 7th when yuri fell and mercante yelled fuck and **** and moved his arms in a swinging motion.he did that last year in cotto/clottey when they headbutted.I'm glad he didn't regret it.stand by ur decision.I bet benji estevez, smoger, Steele,Cortez would have stopped it when that towel flew in.Arthur is a true east coast guy and he knew the significance of the fight in Yankees stadium.

if it was in the UK, the referee would have stopped the fight BEFORE any towel was thrown

Definate Props to Mercante.. He did a great job.. Let a champion continue to fight.. Yuri wanted to continue..

I wasnt sure what was going on since i was in the crowd... even when Buffer annouced that the fight was gonna go on it was so loud that you could barely hear him..

Great fight at Yankee stadium.. hope they do it again..
