As an average of all participants, I'd have to go with F-1 - basically because there's like ...what ...30-40 odd drivers in total with maybe the top 10 earning well in excess of $50m a year.
F1 is not...because you only have 30-40 in the whole world.
The best paying sports are soccer, nfl, nba, etc....where you have hundreds of players in the top leagues earning millions of dollars each....
one of australia's most popular sporting heroes is cricket player shane warne and he might earn a mill or two max from all of his commitments......whereas you have mark viduka also from australia who plays soccer in england and probably earns around six million....and he is relatively unknown in australia.......
Golf pays a crazy amount. However it is really hard to tell because it really depends on who you are in the sport. DLH might make 30 million but he always didnt and people on his undercards dont even make a million so it really depends. There are some basketball players who make less than a million a year and Michael Jordan grossed on average about 36 million.
I believe Golf is probably the most lucrative, Tiger Woods raked in almost 90 million last year. A shot with a club can earn you millions.
I remember from my old sports almanacs in the 90s that Tyson was consistently the highest-paid athlete in any sport, including Formula 1 I believe. Though you have to keep in mind that these figures did not include endorsements. Jordan for example made a few mil a year for most of his career but of course made like twenty times that in commercials.
Basketball has the higest average of any pro sport in North America because there are so few players on a team. I mean, think about it, you can pay each guy 4 mil a year and that would still be like 25% of the payroll of the Yankees. Of course like 90% of the payroll on an NBA team goes to its starters and a coupel of other guys, as far as I know.

Ohh yeah endorsements is where athletes make there money. Hell Lebron James gets paid less than 3 million a year playing but his endorsement deals were crazy. He raked in a ****load of money.

Yes, it was interesting because boxers were always in the top ranking in terms of salary but were basically zero dollars in endorsements, while most of the other richest athletes were the other way around.
Hockey's another sport where endorsements are scarce. We don't have any multi-billion dollar skate companies up here . Though Nike did have a lame hockey ad campaign going for a while.
