Sharing some Irish ancestry myself, it was really cool to see Ali trace back his roots. He said that that was his most pleasurable trip he has been on, he really really enjoyed it. The reception was great too, everybody came out to meet and greet him. He visited the house his great-grandfather lived in and they gave him the key to the town. As im sure youre aware he was unaware of his racial background until after he retired. Clay was his Irish name, he changed it thinking it was a slave name but it wasnt. LONG LIVE CASSIUS CLAY!!!

I don't think there's anything wrong with it as a term. There is a certain style that is more commonly found among Europeans than the rest of the world. Strong jab, hands high, preferring to fight on the outside, emphasis on technique/textbook style rather than relying on reflexes or a lot of upper-body movement.

It's the same with talking about a 'Mexican style'. Not every Mexican is tough, aggressive and willing to stand and trade, but people know what you mean when you use the term and no one gets offended.

I do think it gets used too often, in that you hear people like Froch and Abraham described that way by Showtime. If Froch was Mexican, no one would say he had a European style. Abraham does not really use his jab to keep people on the end of his punches, he sometimes uses it to back his opponent up, but he's often shorter than his opponent and so often fights at closer range than the likes of Wlad, Kessler, Sturm etc. He transitions between Clottey-like defense and wild slugger offense, which not many Europeans do.

I don't think it's a 'white' thing either. Frank Bruno fought with a very textbook style, so did Lennox and some of Manny Steward's other non-white, non-European fighters.

Why do people say this and nothing is ever mentioned about it afterwards? This is thinly veiled racism.

It's usually said in a way to make a particular fighter out to be inferior, from the same people that will call any white fighter a '"robot" or any hispanic fighter a "punching bag".

I've heard it plenty of times over recent months, most notably from Ward and Dirrell, the new faces of black power.

Is it ok to racially abuse white people? It seems so.

                TC
no it means they dont crouch pivot or catch punches. the english style is straight hard punching with a stance set up for moving back and forth easily. watch randy turpin

tbh you see these european guys and they call it a textbook style but that is wrong. a textbook fighter should be able to do everything, without relying on a clinch or backing up. you have to go back a few years to see a guy with a real good textbook style that wasn't weak on offense
