The majority of Tarvers punches were thown from just throwing out his arms without the foundation of twisting his frame and using his legs, and many were on Johnson's arms and gloves.
He threw many pitty patting flurries, and they were effective because Johnson wasn't working enough. It won him the fight, but I don't think it was very impressive at all.
He wasn't bombing his man out with power shot after power shot, and trust me I HATE pitty-pat punches, but I think his overall strategy was pretty effective and pretty impressive.
revenged all of his losses, 3 in witch he should have won the 1st time.
Sorry man, but that's nuts.
Harding cleary beat Tarver in their 1st fight. Tarver was out of gas in the 11th and 12th and was nearly stopped. He was punched all around the ring.
In the 1st Jones fight, he stood in front of Jones doing very little most of the time eating a shot at a time, and then in 6 of 12 rounds he threw one good flurry that backed Jones up. Even having that fight a draw would be generous to Tarver.
Props to him for scoring wins in all 3 rematches, but I think you're really over rating him.
He's a strong puncher when he lands the left, but he relys too much on flurrying to steal rounds.
Good on him for doing what he needed to do tonight though.
He wasn't bombing his man out with power shot after power shot, and trust me I HATE pitty-pat punches, but I think his overall strategy was pretty effective and pretty impressive.
Yes I think so too. It was effective, but not impressive.
I don't think Johnson has it left in him to come in with the necessary condition, so I think there's no need for a 3rd fight.
Tarver deserves credit for this win, he did what he needed to do.
Tarver is one of the more talanted fighters, i have ever seen. That 12th round was priceless, after a great fight.
I dig your general sentiments about Tarver's skills, but calling that 12th round priceless is flat out wrong. That was chicken **** salad if you ask me. All time greats don't hug their way to a victory.
I was for the most part impressed with Tarver's will to fight Johnson's game, and him not relying on that opossum tactic that he used in the first fight. You could tell that he was clearly tired, and still gave it his all in the later rounds despite 11. He was clearly stunned, and hurt from the body work he sustained, and came out firing early in the 12th.
The John Ruiz clinching towards the end of the fight was necessary, because he was dead tired. He hit Johnson with the kitchen sink, and he never went down. I was sold that Tarver was going to stop him this time around, and underrated Johnson's chin and willingness to walk through hailstorms, despite knowing he has never been knocked down.
Johnson did what he normally does, and that is absorb a tremendous amount of punishment from heavy handed fighters. Tarver on the other hand showed he can **** inside:
Next time around, I think it gets easier for Tarver because he has Johnson figured out now. He might be able to stop Glen in the third fight if he uses the exact same strategy he did tonight.
That being said: Tarver shows he is a tactical fighter. On a micro level, his gameplans change as his fights progress and it makes him a very tough opponent. I dont think there is anyone in the division who would have weathered the storm of punches he showered on Johnson. No damn way. He would pit-pat, then stun him with the left hand, and Johnson was doing alot of clinching in the middle rounds because he was hurt bad.
Which one of the devastating hugs in round 12 caused you to give it to Tarver?
Which punch did you see Johnson land that caused you to give it to him?
Tarver was throwing punches and smothering Johnson before any return fire. He was holding but he also did some work while not letting Johnson do any work. Once again it was good strategy by Tarver which he used all night.
