Also Alvarez punching power is overrated, Jose Cotto ate those shots like it was nothing when Alvarez did lan and Jose Cotto is a midget and doesn't even belong in that weight class. The naturally smaller man shook up Alvarez in the first round! If Jose Cotto was in that weight class, he probably would have KO'd Alvarez in the first.

Alvarez to me is nothing but a Chavez Jr clone. Go back to fighting cab-drivers in Mexico and people making excuses for him because of his age.
Sergio Martinez turned pro in 97. Saul turned pro in 05.

The kid is overrated and a hype job. Terrible chin, overrated power, good technique and punch selection. I feel for him, looks like he won't be a 147 fighter for long and he is too small and weak chinned to make noise at 154.

Really, seriously you have seen this guy fight once and that is what you get out of it? PBF got rocked by Corely, not exactly a power puncher. Alvarez is 19 and I think with some refining he will gain a belt, maybe he won't ever be the man at a division but I agree with the person who said he could be a paper champion.

If he develops a better defense and does some more work he can rattle the division if 4-5 years. That said he will only be 23 or 24 in that amount of time. Give him some time to develop.

Canelo did look like he was all hype...Canelo fought a José Cotto(who's actually a lightweight) at jr middle weight(3 divisions above his natural weight) which is basically Canelo's natural weight & Canelo had a height & reach advantage & Canelo had the almost the same amounts of fights as Cotto(Cotto had 1 more, but Canelo claims to have 44 fights which is more than Cotto)...So by the look of things & with all the advantages that were in favor of Alvarez & if was as good as they made him out to be he should have crushed Cotto in 4 rounds or less...But instead Canelo got rocked by the much smaller & highly overweight fighter(Cotto looked like a little barrel) in the 1st round & even thou Alvarez was winning the fight, Cotto basically took Canelo's punches very well & Cotto was the one taking the fight to Alvarez & the fight would have gone the distance if the ref wouldn't stopped it(I thought to fight was stopped prematurely) Cotto was taking shots, but Alvarez was also missing some & Cotto was swinging back & wasn't really hurt....I think Alvarez is not ready for the Berto's, Collazo's, or the Julio's & the Angulo's of the welter & jr middle divisions..With all this said never mind the elite of these weight clases......

Bye the way Cotto even thou Cotto's last fights(before this one) were at 144 & 143lbs, before that he was off for 2 years(2007 to 2009) & while he was off he blew up to 200lbs & was working his way down to his natural 135 or at least 140lbs....

a mind filled with hate is a mind with no room for reason or wisdom. for a person to see, his eyes have to be open. reason or wisdom can not be force fed . alvares passed his first big test, true he had certain inate advantages like heit and reach but those two advantages dont always equate to winning a boxing match if the boxing skills are not present thankfully for alvares he had the skills. cotto also had some advantages over his aponent like over all experiance and matureity in and out of the ring. cotto is an ex olimpian with plenty of amature fights before he turned pro, and as a pro hes experiance at the higher level is more extisive than alvares's but either he faild to use his experiance or alvares nulified it, i think tha latter is true. in my humble opinion saul alvares is a very good prospect at this time, as for his chin he showed he can take a good punch and do what is nesasery to not get kod. as an example to my pr freands i would remind them of one hell of a fighter and a great champion by the name of filex trinidad who always seemed to not only getknoked silly but also end up on his tuchy in alot of his fights, but would get up to win his fights. the greatness of a boxer is determend by his answer to adversity and his limits as a mortal being. mexican cab drivers can be some very thought hombres dont knock them nobody has a monopoly on courage or intelect.

Undefeated teenaged welterweight Saul Alvarez has become the darling of both Golden Boy Promotions and HBO, which means we’ll be seeing a lot of the red-headed Mexican in the near future, whether or not his skills and potential justify the coverage.

For the moment, the potential is evident but the overwhelming praise and ambitious projections might be a bit premature. Alvarez handled himself well against a seasoned veteran, ending the fight strong after a rocky start to stop Jose Miguel Cotto in the ninth round of their over-the-limit welterweight bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. hell yeah this was a good fight to watch....i honestly thought alvarez was going to get beat since he almost got Knocked Down in the 1st round but remained calm then dominated through the rest of the fight and then stopped Cotto.....but Props to Cotto though the guys tough and dosnt go down easy....but at 19 to fight Older and perhaps even stronger men is amazing

He got stunned never hurt he recuperated real quick and shows at age 19 that he keeps his compusore down hits with so much accuracy. Didn't your boy Juanma ****** ass instead of keeping his compursore he fought matagawas fight and alvarez fought his fight.

Now lastly alvarez is 19 and cotto even though smaller has lots of experiene, matawa don't have experience for **** compared to cotto and he was no goddamn olympian. So don't come here with your bull**** you are either hurt cause a mexican beat a puertorican or just a ****ing hater. cotto is way faster way better experienced than a matwaga better boxer overall former olympian and a kid of 19 years old is facing then again your boy is a champion and facing ****ty opposition as matawa and how matawa made him look is just horrible.

Mayweather tonight let his right hand down and got stunned by mosley does that mean he ****ing sucks or is overhyped??? Kid won everyround there after not to mention the following round he knock cotto down. yet he is 19 years old and has much more improvement to make, kid has great defense, great speed, really accurate decent power and good knowledge of boxing not to mention this ****ing kid don't have any amateur experience this kid is bound for success.
Ok so you are comparing Mtagwa with Cotto??
What weight does Mtagwa fight in?? 122 lbs
What weight does Cotto fight in??135 lbs maybe 140 lbs now
Juanma vs Mtagwa 122 lbs fight
Cotto vs Alvares 154 lbs fight
Alvares stunned and hurt in the first round
Juanma hurt in the 11 round.

I honestly had cotto wining the first round and the round in which alvarez took off which seem like he was resting just coasting through it. Anyways I see good potential from this kid hes not there yet about 4 more fights i see him fighting the collazos or quintana stepping up little by littel while fully growing his body and acquiring more experience by stepping up competition fight by fight.

To me cotto was a good opponent even though small he had lot of experience and is a pretty good boxer and test for alvarez what would of been the point if they had just faced alvarez with a tomato can instead cotto made saul show his skills.

Not to mention older cotto seems to have a better chin and bigger heart than younger cotto even though he was getting his ass beat he kept coming instead of folding to pressure like his younger brother but hey thats me thats what I saw.
and cotto is not a big puncher.

The sky is the limit for this kid. To be 19, and to have the skills that he progresses already, is scary. His body has not filled out yet. Imagine what he will be, when he gets to be 25 years old. He will eventually have to move up in weight, and his best class will probably be middleweight. His upper body is huge, and I see great things for him. I hope GBP brings him along slowly, because he's getting his amateur training, as a professional. Solidify the defense, and we are looking at a future prize fighter, who sells alot of PPV's.
