Comments Thread For: Alvarez Stops Cotto To Top Who R U Picking Undercard

By Jake Donovan - Let the hard sell begin.

Undefeated teenaged welterweight Saul Alvarez has become the darling of both Golden Boy Promotions and HBO, which means we’ll be seeing a lot of the red-headed Mexican in the near future, whether or not his skills and potential justify the coverage.

For the moment, the potential is evident but the overwhelming praise and ambitious projections might be a bit premature. Alvarez handled himself well against a seasoned veteran, ending the fight strong after a rocky start to stop Jose Miguel Cotto in the ninth round of their over-the-limit welterweight bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alvarez looks like a fighter who could do big things in the future. Outside of that scare in the first round, I was really impressed with the kid. And it's too bad that Junito doesn't have the heart and stamina that his brother does or else he might actually get somewhere.

              ****** Stoppage.

Cotto wasn't hurt, he was ducking and weaving as well as firing back, didn't even take many of them swinging shots.

Weeks reffed the Levander Johnson-Jesus Chavez fight. Could have something to do with the quick stoppage here.

His defense needs major work. After he throws punches, his hands drop. He's also open for a huge counter left hook when he throws that uppercut. Kid shows some potential though, I'm really impressed with his accuracy for being only 19.

Miguel Cotto would have knocked Alvarez out, I'd like to see Alvarez call out big brother now. I mean even if he is only 19 he claims to have 44 fights. But most of them were against very soft opposition, this Jose Cotto fight was his first serious step up in competition. And honestly, I think Miguel would walk through this kid. You can be like, oh he has no amateur background but who cares? Neither did Martinez, that didn't stop Martinez wanting to fight the best out there.
