To claim that if Cus was around that Tyson would be invincible is assinine. All that would have done is delayed the inevitable. You see, Mike wasn't Cus's first heavyweight champ. Floyd Patterson was. And Cus knew if Floyd tangled with Sonny Liston, Floyd would get beat. Cus knew what his fighter's weaknesses were. So they ducked Sonny until Floyd finally insisted on fighting Sonny. And the rest is history.

Would Cus let Tyson fight Douglas? Who knows, but I suspect he might have been more than a little nervous with the circumstances. As a good lawyer does, so does a good trainer, don't ask a question that you don't already know the answer to. With Buster's Mom dying and his reputation of being and up and down fighter with the skills to beat Tyson, maybe enough questions would have been raised to cause concern. Cus knew what he had in Mike, a one dimensional fighter with serious flaws.

Everyone has a kyrponite. Even a young iron mike.

Don king happens, injuries happen, fights catch up to you, pagaent girls happen, money happens, fame, jail time, lack of training for a bum fighter, or having a bad day against a guy on a good day.

The fact is Tyson is what he is and maybe that was because of his limitations. He had the tools to fight and dominate but not to deal with all that other stuff in life that got in the way.
In the end, that is why he is, where he' at today.
Just like McCall or Ike Ibeauchi, those guys had a chance but blew it because they were mentally ill. It's sad but its part of a package.

I'm sick of people saying "What Mike Tyson could've been." He is where is, stop making excuse for the guy. WWII happen to Joe Louis, Marciano. People die in your life and stuff happens. You have to deal with it. Mike couldn't deal with what was infront of his life. He ain't making any excuse for it anymore, so why are other people? Mike knew his fate, he just been trying to pay the bills and ditched that legacy stuff out the window a long time.

Marciano is my favorite heavy but his weakness, 3 min rounds. That guy need 12-15 rounds of fighting to wear you down. 8-10 round fight and a good boxer would've beaten him. Marciano did lose, in amateur fights, 6 rounds fights.

marciano unbeatable?lol get the *** out of here he fought guys who weighed between 155 and 200 pounds.the little boy couldnt even compete with any decent 220 pound plus heavyweight today never mind the all time great ones.tyson would crush any guy who weighed under 200 pounds because they dont have the power to hurt him but in no way was he unbeatable.ali foreman frazier lyle lewis bowe tua ibeabuchi holyfield could of all beat him well holyfield douglas lewis williams and that big white guy did beat him.tyson will always be overrated by not nearly as overrated as marciano.when will you crackheads get this.he weighed 180 pounds.fighting bums who weighed from 155 to 200 pounds dont mean you could do the same thing to true modern heavyweights.but i guess him being white makes him better than all of the black fighters who weighed 180 and tried to move up to heavyweight huh?

They tested Rockys power, he had the power needed to peirce armor, and they said he had the power needed to bench press 1,000 pounds. Tyson, Foreman, Shavers, or any other heavyweight over 200 has never been proven the powerful. You say he couldn't knock out Tyson? Buster Douglas knocked out Tyson, Tyson was never hit cleanly because of head movement.

Mike's head movement, hand speed, his ability to rotate on his punches (especially that left hook) as well as his ability to throw short straight punches with precision and power all went away with Cus. If any of you ever actually boxed you would know discipline wins fights. Cus was Mike's decipline. Without Cus in his life at all Mike Tyson becomes a neverheard of "lifer" in the Pen. However extend that discipline further into the young physical phenom's life and I have no doubt he earns universal Top All Time Respect beside Ali. And don't foget about Mike Tyson coming out of Jail with the teachings of Islam, a huge steroid developed body and a shrunken crack head. The guy we've watched lose is no where near the man who could have been Heavyweight Champ at 18 and maybe even 17. Does anyone remember Ali at that age and how much he improved before shocking the world and Liston. Mike screwed Mike no doubt and it was Don Kings sloppy seconds by then too, however, you cannot take away the fact he was physically the greatest wasted talent in professional sports in at least my lifetime.

AWESOME POST. Tyson was an unbelievably gifted fighter. Speed, Quickness, Accuracy, DEFENSE AND STAMINA when he was in his prime. Anybody who watched his early fights would see this. Regardless, wasted talent makes your legacy much worse. I have more respect for a guy like Morales. Someone without blinding speed or power but somehow still gets it done.

Tyson and Cus were great together but one can hardly call them invincible. They had flaws just as we all have.

I remember watching a young Mike do that crazy head bobbing movement as he went inside, that was always so awesome in my opinion. especially when he would explode with those giant left hooks and uppers.

                      sigh.

where have you gone, mike tyson?
