I don't know how anyone can pick one or the other without any doubt.

A lot of people seem to forget Vargas beat Winky and Quartey. Ike was a complete beast at that time and Winky was no walk-over either.

Vargas in his day was the kind of fighter every fan liked and watched. Before he signed to go pro he might of been one of the most highly sought out prospects of the last 15 years by every promoter. I'm a huge Cotto fan, I don't know who was better at their prime but it's hard for me to think Cotto's wins are better than Vargas's.

Dude was amazing. Both are/were great fighters and exciting to watch though.

Cotto hands down. It took a cheating loser to break Cotto down. I guess in Mexico it's either plaster or Roids..
you say this with a pic of cheato triniwraps..the irony...

In puerto rico it's either low blows or triniwraps..

Quartey had been slowed by inactivity and was moving up in weight. He also just got a rough decision in the De La Hoya fight a year and change earlier. He was a complete beast in the early-mid 90's, Vargas faced a less tenacious Quartey in my opinion.

Otherwise I'll say good post and I'll **** off now.

To the people saying that Cotto wouldn't have handled Vargas' opponents, well, why should he have been able to? Cotto boxed at 140 and 147 where as Vargas was a career 154 pounder, plus the TS already stated that's not what this thread is about. But if you do want to compare common opponents, Cotto won a close decision over Mosley where as Vargas lost twice to him, once by brutal KO.

Both guys have had great careers and I actually think that Vargas' fast rise to the top suited his style, I don't think maturation would have helped him too much since his best assets were his strength and raw aggression; he needed the freshness of youth to make him the fighter he was.

I voted for Cotto simply because I believe him to be the superior technician and better overall boxer.

if they were to fight then i would take fernando vargas by late rounds tko. he had the style to beat miguel cotto. plus he was just overall way bigger than cotto.

if were talking accomplishments, then its cotto.

Cotto looked so promising until the plaster beat down.

Cotto at his peak was somethin special. Not a defensive wizard by any means, but knew when to select his shots, stiff hard jab, ring generalship, and truly at the time underrated hand speed. Vargas though to me was the tougher guy out of the two, meaning...he can take an ass whippin a little better and keep fighting. But ultimately, Vargas did lose those fights he got hurt and kept fighting.

But based on overall skill, I got Cotto.

That of course has little to do with the question but the answer is 'Ferocious' Fernando Vargas.

Vargas, though he was thrown to the Lions way too early
