Better fighter at their peak: Miguel Cotto or Fernando Vargas

I'm of course not speaking head-to-head since they're of different size and not talking about achievements either.

Just simply, P4P, at their best, who was the superior fighter?

It's close. Vargas was more durable, but I think his ultimate downfall(besides being thrown to the wolves so early) was that he didn't have the punching power to fit his preferred style.

Cotto was more versatile, and as a result, a little more talented.

Vargas domianted African Quartey, Cotto barely got the win over African Clottey.
Vargas went to War with Mexican-American De La Hoya, Cotto quit against Mexican-American Margarito.

That of course has little to do with the question but the answer is 'Ferocious' Fernando Vargas.

Vargas and it aint even close. Say what you want about his fight with Winky. But I think that version of Winky would've brutalized Cotto. And Cotto would've lost to even the rusty version of Quartey that Vargas fought.

Cotto wasn't much more talented, if at all, than Vargas. This goes for talent/athleticism and technical skills as well. Both guys had decent speed but weren't exactly speedsters. Cotto's crisp fluid combinations and good timing helped make up for it. Both had respectable power but neither were huge one-shot punchers. Cotto's durability has been a question mark since 2005. Vargas's durability became a question mark after the Trinidad loss. Before that his chin was seen as being sound. Vargas showed very good stamina and workrate in the fights with Wright and Quartey. Cotto can be a solid defensive fighter behind his peek-a-boo defense and movement, but has always shown susceptibility to the uppercut. Vargas at times could show good defensive reflexes, but his achilles heel on defense was eating the left hook.

Vargas also showed versatility in the Quartey fight as moved around the ring and boxed behind a nice jab at times, even outjabbing Ike, as well as mixing it up on the inside and hammering Quartey on the ropes.

Cotto at his best was very good. Vargas was always overrated.
