wow sorry to hear this. I guess you have to weigh the opportunity vs the risk and as you said assessing the fighters mental and physical readiness for this after having the rug ripped out from under him. Best of luck.

very true, good post. Also, there are obviously details I cant go into here surrounding the situation but let's just say that the behind the scenes events werent exactly confidence inducing for us, either...

^ thanks for the earlier response about how much training you missed. I was reading several articles on the fight being cancelled or not (not just this one) and im sure there's more to the story but I found it a bit unsettling that the promoters hadn't even decided on a venue yet for the place (which is was originally cancelled the fight I believe, at least the article I read said that)

Scully I know your in the buisness first hand and even if you don't promote you probably have some kind of idea what is going on (which you hint at above)

but as a fan I find the level of incompatence baffling. As shouldn't the venue of the fight be one of the first things decided on?

and if it turns out that you don't like Godfrey's chances you have every right to not go forward with the fight, right? as someone above me said

but it is such a bummer if it turns out that way, because it was an error on the promoters and not the fighter. As a trainer you'd probably rather have a more legit reason to not fight i.e. injury

however missing a fight for something of this nature (promotional screw up) just sucks.

well, I mean there is a lot involved...we werent injured...and the fight was set for Las Vegas until this past Wednesday....they told us the fight was off and for them to suddenly come up with a spot just two days later was kind of odd to me...I know a lot of what went on behind the scenes but, really, I am sure there is a great deal going on there that I dont know about...its definitely a tough business and EXACTLY the reason why I always said I wouldto be either a boxer, trainer or analyst, thats it...

The situation sucks as I and many fans really were interested in the Cunningham fight but this is a world class CW that Godfrey was to be going up against and focus is not a light switch that most can turn on and off so quickly.

There is a great deal of mental preparation that goes into something where you know that chances are you will experience some degree of pain and have to test your will and character to its limits.

So no fault on Matt's part if he in actuality had no idea about this until he heard about it on the FNF airing.

I'm trying to imagine what it must be like, psychologically, to think you're fighting, then being told you're not, then being told you are again, and for less money.

Every time I try and think this through, I almost feel like I'm getting there, only for the situation to become confused in my mind. It's like John says in the article, if you're not a boxer you just can't get a grasp on this.

THAT is the thing...it is just a terrible mental situation...

no I know your fighter isn't injured .. just saying an injury or something of that nature would be a more acceptable reason to miss a fight. Fighter X sprains an ankle or bruises his hand in training ... he can't train and the fight date has to be rescheduled (best case)

the article I read announcing the original cancellation of the fight said it was because a fight venue couldn't be found.

it must be a frustrating situation to have to deal with something like this, be all ready and good to go

**the last time I can recall that an entire boxing card was called off, was when Winky Wright was supposed to fight Grady Brewer in December of last year.

                      Fighters Fight.

Especially when they can capture a World Title. I believe that the fight will still happen and that the Godfrey camp is posturing for more money!
