  • You still haven't shown any proof of Burley fighting that style before Pep. Please show me or tell me of a fight that I can go back and watch as proof that Burley was fighting like that before pep.

I know you can't so this will be my last reply on this topic. There might have been some unkown guy out there but someone brings it to light...Pep gets credit. /Thread

This was a joke right? Did you just ask me to show you footage of of a 1938 Charlie Burley?

Please say that was a joke.

I never said Burley invented slick boxing because he didnt. Just like Pep didnt. Like I said How did Pep invent slick boxing?

      lmao.

The very definition of boxing means hit .......and not get hit.

      • I would say Burley who again was very skilled and was a slick fighter... Used the shoulder roll perfectly... But, I will say Burley probably got his style from Walcott, Johnson, and Gans. But, all those 3 got there style from George Dixon... IMO Burley took there style and implemented a few things here and there...

Another great scintific boxer of all time is Benny Leonard. Who was white was pretty slick. But, his style was different then Pep... And, Leonard started his career way before Pep or Burley did. And, Leonard was white. I have Benny Leonard in the top 10 greatest defensive fighter of all time...
you know jrose you are one of the few posters on this board who I respect because of your knowledge and unbiased stance.

See this is the thing....no one has yet to state a clear definition of a "slick boxer". This changes so much it's ridiculous. When I said Pep I was going according the boards definiton of what a "slick fighter" is. No matter what though...all these modern day fighters got their influence from pep which is why I say "they took his style and ran with it". Basically the style they use is a carbon copy of what he did, mixed with elements from other older fighters.

Naw I see what you mean. what Im saying is that Osiris is saying Pep "invented" slick boxing. Like really?..lol. Boxing was around before Jesus was born.

Ofcourse there was slick fighters. Then he said name someone who was slick before Pep was. I said Burley. Again correct.

Did they fight different yes. Was Burley slick as hell. yes. So his argument makes no sense.

That is true in the bold. People on here have different definition for slick... Some people on here think Zab Judah is slick... If the true definition is not to get hit at all. Then again that goes to Pep because he was the first fighter that I know of that you could not land a glove on at all... It was really something amazing... But, it all goes with the true definition of slick... And, different fans have different definitions...

No. This is what you said.

yeah that Idiot fails to realize that it was a white man who invented that style and black fighters, later on down the road, took that style and ran with it.

That is a VERY broad and inaccurate statement. Now saying Pep influenced Leonard and Pernell is one thing. Ill agree with you.

Saying he INVENTED slick boxing. Is irresponsible.

yes it was a joke because I know you don't know **** about burley as a fighter and only repeat stuff you heard other posters (such as shadows) have pointed out. Im not even sure what your definition of a "slick fighter" is because neither you or anyone has been consistent in what you claim fits that bill. From what I got from you and others is a guy who combines angles, footwork, slipping, ducking, defense first fighting etc. If that is the case then that is why I say Pep invented that style. No one was fighting like that before him. If so please name them.

                    Thats what you said.

I said. How? Boxing has been around since 1500 BC. So in other words we dont know who the first slick fighter was.

Now then you said that Sweet Pea, Leonard and whoever else said Pep had a great influence on they career.

I said. Maybe true. Still doesn't change the fact that Pep didn't "invent" slick boxing.

Then you said. Name me a fighter who was slick before Pep. I said Charlie Burley. He was born before Pep and started his career before Pep did.

Burley is the greatest fighter that no one knows. Pep got his chances. He got fame and glory. Now if you want to say that Pep influenced Leonard. Fine. Great I would hope so.

But if you say Pep INVENTED slick boxing. I have a problem with that.
who "discovered" america, spain or the vikings?

notice how I said "that style" ....the style you guys claim only African Americans only use. A good majority of defensive boxing is basically "slick" but if I name a guy who does those things...according to you they aren't "slick fighters". Like I said "that style"....the style you claim pac is ducking, was invented by Willie Pep.
