Joe Calzaghe: If I did lose, that one loss would destroy everything I’ve done

Hopkins backed out of fighting Joe, why would Joe fight Jones for penuts knowing full well the risk of that fight? What would that get him? Go up to Light heavy vacating SMW belt, lose to Jones then go back down? He wouldn't even have a title then and even less people would fight nim, less money etc.
You guys got to be realistic.Comment

Dont think the Jones fight was ever really on the table. Shame Hopkins backed out when it was proposed cos a win for Joe there would've propelled him straight into contention to fight a prime Roy and get a decent split.Hopkins backed out of fighting Joe, why would Joe fight Jones for penuts knowing full well the risk of that fight? he didn't have that luxury because he was fighting in obscurity against nobodies for 10 years.
The point is he COULD HAVE made more of an effort to fight better opposition throughout his career. I don't know how anyone can deny this.
Again, Calzaghe was a very talented fighter with a great career, but he could have had a better resume. That's all we (or I) am saying.Comment

Joe had a fantastic career but it could of been an awful lot better than what it already is. We all know Hopkins pulled outta the fight etc but Joe still could of faced better fighters after the Hopkins fight. Frank Warren probaly had a huge part in that but even frank admitted Joe wouldn't take risks or promote himself to the public.
The greatest move Warren and Calzaghe did was make sure the Lacy fight was on ITV instead of Sky. That was probaly one of the best career decisions they made. After the Lacy fight, Calzaghe became an household name.Comment

This just goes to show you that Calzaghe is the eptimome of a boxer who fights for himself and doesn't give the fans the fights they want. It's just such a shame he wasted all that talent fighting fights like a rematch with a guy who he KOd in the first round. Such a shame.
And when Calzaghe would do things like pull out of fights at the last minute because of some hand injury, how can you blame guys like Hopkins and Jones not wanting to touch him with a ten foot pole when they can go on to do things like fight Oscar De La Hoya for big money or go up to Heavyweight and win a world title? This is just something to think about. This is why Paul Williams is telling Kelly Pavlik to go piss up a rope because of jerking people around. So Joe isn't the only example. It's just that Calzaghe doesn't have anybody to blame for his pathetic resume but himself.Comment
