Joe Calzaghe: If I did lose, that one loss would destroy everything I’ve done

What could Calzaghe have down to make a Hopkins fight happen?Comment

When you try to evaluate someones career like McCallums do you take into account all the fights he tried to make but which never come off. None of the fab four wanted anything to do with him. So his resume suffers but its not his fault. I think Leonard was semi retired so I think a case can be made that that fight couldnt of happened anyway.Comment

I do take that into account but at the end of the day, a fighter is evaluated on who he did fight and when he fought them. Can't give people imaginary wins. When you try to evaluate someones career like McCallums do you take into account all the fights he tried to make but which never come off. I don't know how much he should get criticized there, as hopkins was looking at bigger fish to fry at the time, but he could have taken what he could have got, even if it's for less money, etc.
The one fight that really would have helped joe's career imo was Glen Johnson, after Johnson had beat Tarver & Roy Jones. That would have been a very solid name on his resume and that was the best version of Glen Johnson of his career, the year he was Fighter of the Year.Comment

Hmmm love how you snuck that one in...leaving out the fact he signed to fight Hopkins?Roy Jones, Glen Johnson, Bernard Hopkins for sure, guys like Antwun Echols and maybe even Sven Ottke. There were countless other guys at the top of SMW over the years he never fought. Additionally, instead of holding on to one belt for 10 years fighting C and D level fighters he could/should have went after the other belts a lot sooner than he did. I'm sure some of that was Frank Warren protecting him a bit, but on the other hand at the end of the day, if a fighter wants to fight someone it can happen.
Calzaghe was a talented fighter I just think it's clear at some point he got really scared of losing that zero and that effected his career greatly, imo. His resume could/should have been much better. Even if he had a loss or two if the quality of opposition is so high it does't matter. I mean recall the thread yesterday, who has a better resume - Oscar de la hoya or Calzaghe? Oscar won by a landslide. He lost a number of times but he fought everyone. That's typically how people are judged when the careers are all said and done, who did they fight? What kind of challenges did they take? etc.Comment
