You don't need an amateur career to turn pro, and you don't necessarily have to be a great amateur to be a great pro, but if you want to have a solid base and not get wiped out as a pro, fight as an amateur first off. Much safer environment to develop fighting experience and skills in.
If I was a trainer I would never turn a guy pro first off, he needs amateur fights first, and I don't know any trainers who wouldn't do the same.
See if you lose your first am fight, it's no big deal at all. Records don't matter much, you can have a poor record and still enter tournaments and all that
But as a pro you are fighting to land a payday and having an appealing record is a big factor in that, so if you step straight into the pros with no fighting experience, come in with no backup or background, get matched with whoever, and get your ass beat.....leaves you in a much worse situation...
