I never understood the logic behind a good defense equating to not "take chances" As a fight you are not supposed to get hit. You're not supposed to fight ****** and allow you're opponent to tee of on you or give him the best chance to win. And don't think for a minute fighters like Gatti, Corrales, or Taylor, enjoyed talking punches. Nobody does. They didn't havea choice. They didn't have the defensive skill to avoid the punishment. There is nothing great about taking punishment if you don't have to. Actually it would be ******.
Will be a long time before this is truly understood and respected in boxing again. If more people truly knew and understood what they are SUPPOSED to be watchiing when looking at boxing things would be a lot different.

i think and believe that if he was in that era he would have been even better and adapted to the competition.

I am liking the way you have been debating in this thread but come on man. Winky, Cotto and Vargas as elite and going in the HOF 1st ballot??? Hell NO. None of them are going to the HOF. If any of them go the HOF should change its name to the Hall of Good Boxers.

WE Learn these fighters,,

I grew up in the Day of Ali and Liston,,,,I heard all the stuff said about him in that day and forgotten most of it,,

my point its easy to buy the tapes of fighters and make and accessment of their life but you miss all the things of the day that went into making the fighter he really was. And one can get a misconception of ALI !!!!!

Ali was an ACE,,,,nobody did what he did in the ring. He had two boxing lives.... The first he was UNTOUCHABLE,,,, Brian LONDON never touched him in that three round fight.

Three years in exile was bad... I thought this was killing his boxing,,,,,, when he came back that first Cassius ALI WAS GONE FOREVER but what came out proved him to be the GREATEST ever !!!!! He took on ALL COMERS and there were some bad dudes much meaner and tougher than today,,,,,,,he makes Mayweather look like a pile of ****

              too much to say
It gets down to what true GREATNESS is....ALI had it!!!!

Trying to compare fighters from different eras is pointless. All great boxers beat up their fare share of tomato cans. Boxing today is more business than sport. Ali may have fought his fare share of wars but look at his condition now. Look at guys like Mickey Ward who had to have brain surgery as a result of repetetive blows to the head. Boxers have got to live after the glory and the lights are gone.

its not about avoiding. its about what there in the sport for. the glory of being a battered warrior and champion or using boxing as a way to make a living. i think there is a inbetween but usually those guys are controlled by there promoters. money may is a superb boxing prodigy. u say he ducked, he says he went with the biggest names with the most money. u may not have heard but may just settled a 6.5 million dollar tax debt and has four kids. does that not matter? he had a contract on the table for pac and pac didnt sign. bottom line. he wanted mosely 10 years ago and mosely dodnt want to fight cus the money wasnt right. bottom line. may worked his way to a position where all roads lead to floyd. bottom line. that in itself is greatness. sure hes not the brightest lightbuld at home depot or a gentleman..... so what! since when were boxers supposed to be gentleman.

ALi is the greatest. but he is not the best boxer of all time.

look at corey spinks, there are countless brain dead warriors. may is a genius for being able to dominate the sport and still have his wits and his flawless record. at one point may didnt decide who he fought. he was promoted by toprank and arum doesnt let anybody fight he promotes unless arum is the big winner at the end of the day.
