How far has Mexican boxing fallen?

Honestly, Mexican boxing is in shambles at the moment. Alverez is the next hope but if he doesn't pan out if looks very bleak for the Mexican fight fans. It just makes me wonder after last night what went wrong, because Mexico used to be one of the most productive countries in the sport of boxing. What's up with Mexicans quitting over the last few years too? Used to never see that and now you have seen it in many bouts. Lets discuss the state of Mexican boxing.

Of those champions which actually are looked at as P4P guys? Montiel, Soto, and Marquez are also guys towards the end of their career and a few of those guys aren't anything but paper champions. Where are the future stars from the country? I don't think what you posted ends the thread. The state of Mexican boxing is up in the air right now. There used to be guys that out of no where were able to spring upset wins but now it seems like those kind of wins are coming from Cuba, Phillipeans, and PR.

Are you saying this because there is no "super star" at the moment?

Because there are still quality Mexican fighters fighters at the lower weights, it's just that they don't get the same amount of press.

They're are still good Mexican boxers but none that come close to being Top 10 in the sport. Is what I think the TS is getting at.

JMM is the only one and he wont be around soon.

I see what you're saying but boxing in general is hardly churning out superstars at the moment. Mexico is up there as always and has a good batch of youngsters coming through in my opinion.

For the most part, yes. Where are the great Mexican fighters that go above and beyond their tiny divisions to capture the attention of the world? Whens the last huge Mexican upset. Lets take for an example if DeMarco won last night that would be a great victory for a guy that would be looked at as one of the next great Mexican fighters but he lost. Whens the last time Mexico had a great victory like that outside of the Margarito victory. To me it just seems like Mexican boxing is no where up to the level it was in the 90s. I rarely hear about Mexican prospects unless your name is Saul. I'm just saying it seems like Mexican boxing is down atm.

Chris Arreola is pretty good at HW as long as he stays away from the Klitschko's. Juan Manuel Marquez has at least 2 more big fights in him. Margarito's comeback fight is coming soon. And there's several other good Mexican fighters out there. Let's see what happens in 2010.

Not even superstars, man. Just fighters that have impressive wins on their records and can compete with the very best fighters in the world. JMM isn't a huge superstar but he is a great fighter and compete with the very best. I love JMM and realize he is an amazing fighter but where is the next JMM, I just don't see many prospects stringing together impressive wins or creating a buzz. Hell, I hear more about British prospects more than I hear about Mexican prospects right now.
