Comments Thread For: James Kirkland: Tentative Return is Eyed For August

The year is still young but the wheels are already rolling for the tentative return of junior middleweight contender James Kirkland. BoxingScene.com was advised by Kirkland's co-manager and personal attorney, Michael Miller, that an August return is very possible. Last September during a federal hearing in Texas, Kirkland was sentenced to a 24 month prison term for illegally purchasing a firearm during the month of April. At the time of the arrest, Kirkland was still on probation for a 2003 armed robbery offense, which prohibits him from purchasing and/or possessing firearms. [Click Here To Read More]

That is good to hear, 174 is a little heavy but you can only do so much locked up. I think Kirkland should jsut fight out of Texas against modest opposition for a few fights in quick succession to get back into the swing of things before looking for bigger fish toward the start of the new year.

He will be in prison for under a year. I really don't see why people are writing him off. Lots of great fighters have taken much longer layoffs and look like they haven't missed a step. I bet James comes back as a beast and is world champion in middle of 2011.

It is possible that this will turn out good for Kirkland long run, things were comming really fast for him and he was obviously not ready for that. It is possible that this whole ordeal will give him a greater understanding and great appriciation for his career.

It is also possible that he will always be a screw up though wasting his potential.
