How Successful Will "The Event" Be?

I never understand how people assume mexicans love and back pacquiao, my girlfriend is from mexico and her family cant stand him. When i was in guadalajara jalisco the few times i spoke boxing most of them who knew who pacquiao was had some interesting choice words for him, mostly oddly enough, what you would read on here abotu him being asian/midget etc etc

There is very little evidence that somehow suggests that mexicans have this full on support from pacquiao. i dont doubt some mexicans like him, but i dont see this overwhelming support from them.

i never said ALL mexicans support pac. even some filipinos hate pac. Majority of PPV sales come from the hispanic community cuz jus like TS said, they will watch anyone that bring entertaining fights.

nobody knows who the majority of PPV sales come from, with no polling data and no statiscal measure to prove that, thats just a gross assumption.

Full Disclosure: I'm a Mayweather fan; I wouldn't call myself a Pacquiao hater, but I'm sure a lot of Pacquiao fans would and that's fine, whatever.

My thing is this; Pacquiao walked away from the Mayweather fight. That's the truth of the matter. It may have been over principle or whatever, but Pacquiao walked away. He had a deal in place to fight Clottey probably after weeks of negotiation, while pretending to still be compromising on drug testing that he knew came nowhere near meeting the Mayweather position.

So, having walked away from the Mayweather fight, Pacquiao's main trump card in future negotiations with Mayweather will, ostensibly, be that Pacquiao is a bigger draw, more popular and exciting fighter, etc. Fine, whatever.

But here's my question, with all this talk of how popular Pacquiao is how success is "The Event" actually going to be. 25,000 tickets basically went to brokers/scalpers in hopes that the fight would sellout. But with Clottey, not Mayweather, in the other corner, what if the fight doesn't sell out? And even with popular ticket sellers like John Duddy, Jose Luis Castillo, Salvador Sanchez, Alfonso Gomez and others constantly being added to the undercard, what if those 25,000 tickets don't all get picked up? Ultimately, they're going to be given away dirt cheap.

And this is not a diss against Clottey, but do we really expect 1 mil PPV buys with Clottey? I give him a very good chance of winning, but Pacquiao fans aren't necessarily going to think so. Many of them think Pacquiao would knock anyone out and since many of those people have never heard of Clottey...well you know.

What happens if "The Event" just does ok? Maybe 30-35,000 semi papered crowd. Somewhere between 500-600k in PPV buys and Clottey wins 5 round or so. The money, the buys and the appeal of the fight won't match Mayweather-Mosley. Because whether it's fair or not, Mosley is considered more of a live dog than Clottey (personally, I think Clottey has a better chance of beating Pacquiao than Mosley does of beating Mayweather, but I'm probably one of few). So, even if Mayweather has trouble, a win will be considered impressive.

If the money for "The Event" is just fairly good, but dwarfs in comparison to Mayweather-Mosley and the prospective Mayweather-Pacquiao fight and Pacquiao struggles to beat Clottey (or God forbid, loses to Clottey) then was all of this pride against the so-called "Mayweather Rules" really worth it?

At the end of the day, Pacquiao walked away from the Mayweather fight and unless "The Event" is a huge blockbuster and an amazing fight, it was probably the wrong thing to do.

If Pacquiao is really a good draw I think with a guy like Clottey 750k would be very good... everything over it even more...

I mean look. I'm just going to say this. In Olympic track and field athletes get tested for PEDs the day of competition on a regular basis. They still win...and sometimes they end up admitting use years later. The same thing happens in competitive cycling. The tests are necessary. Unless you don't care about PED use in the sport, which is a popular opinion.

That said, Shane Mosley has never failed a PED test, but we know that he used. Why? Because he got rolled up in a federal investigation looking into steroid use by baseball players (whuups, right?). Same thing happened to Evander Holyfield (again, whuups).

Yet, this hasn't spawned anything resembling a movement to better testing. Why? Probably money and lack of coordination. There isn't enough money in most fights and not enough people dedicated to working diligently to make sure the sport's participants are clean. The tests are necessary...just not usually cost effective. If you don't want to, at the very least, accept that fact then we're not having a debate and I could not care less what your response is.

Look .. I have no problem with blood or more test to catch cheats..




The problem I have is the way Mayweather and his team wanted to clean up the sport.. They started a modern day witch hunt trying to slander Pac.

Then all the Floyd fan jump on Pac for not accepting his demands.. But Pac says he will take all the random blood test if NSAC says its needed..


Now if Floyd went straight to NSAC and said he wanted to clean the sport with random blood test starting with his fight.. instead of attacking Pac with alligation of Ped used.. we wouldnt be having this debate..

Thats actually a great point. If he does like 1.4 or something like that with Mosley and Pac does 600k with Clottey. Floyd will not accept 50-50. That will be off the table. Floyd would have big time leverage.
